Previewing
• means looking at the readily visible
parts of the text, like titles and subtitles
and also visuals and graphs, pictures,
and charts.
SKIMMING

Skimming
• means you look for the main point of
the reading and identify the ideas that
develop it
Scanning
• means looking for specific information
RECALLING
BACKGROUND

Recalling Background

• means that as you read, you make
sense of the text by seeing how it fits
with what you already know

Connotation
• is the positive, negative, or neutral
feelings, attitudes, ideas, or
associations with a word
Connotation
• Examples
"house" – neutral connotation (it is a
building in which someone lives)

"home" – positive connotation (a place
of warmth and comfort and familiarity)

"shanty" – negative connotation
(associated with poverty; it is a
small, crudely built shack)

his money)
