How to cite text evidence

1. Locate it in the text

2. Introduce the quote by telling what text it comes from and who is doing what followed by a comma
• In the excerpt from I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, the author states,

3. Pull the whole quote and make sure there are quotation marks around it since they are not your words. ‟ ”

4. Immediately after the quote, put parenthesis with the paragraph or page number inside the parenthesis (9)

5. After the last parenthesis mark, put a period .
