Introduction to biotechnology
WHAT IS BIOTECHNOLOGY ?

“At its simplest, biotechnology is

technology based on biology –
biotechnology harnesses cellular
and biomolecules processes to
develop technologies and products
that help improve our lives and the
health of our planet.”
FIELDS IN BIOTECHNOLOGY

1] Agricultural biotechnology :
Agricultural biotechnology, also known as Agritech, Agricultural
biotechnology focuses on developing genetically modified plants to
increase crop yields, etc.
2] Genetic engineering :
Genetic engineering, also called Genetic Modification , is the
modification and manipulation of an organism's genes using technology.
It is used to change the genetic makeup of cells to produce improved or
novel organisms.
3] Industrial biotechnology :
The aim of industrial biotechnology is to create products that will lead to
more environmentally friendly and cost-effective products used in industry
with the help of Bio-fuels.
4] Synthetic biotechnology :
Synthetic biology involves the design and construction of novel artificial
biological pathways, organisms and devices or the redesign of existing
natural biological systems.
And Many More.
CONTRIBUTIONS OF GREAT
SCIENTISTS
1] Károly Ereky (1878–1952), deserves a place on this list, if nothing else because he was the
first person to use the term ‘biotechnology’ to describe the transformation of raw materials into
useful products using biology.
One of his many publications was a book discussing how leaf proteins could
be used as a possible food source.

2] Eva Ekeblad (1724–1786) .She discovered a technique to make both

alcohol and flour from potatoes, a relatively rare vegetable in Sweden
at the time. This discovery helped reduce famine by diverting grains.
3] Maurice Lemoigne (1883–1967). It may seem a bit unbelievable that the first biodegradable
‘bioplastic’ — polyhydroxybutyrate or PHB — was discovered in 1926 by French biologist and
engenieer Maurice Lemoigne. He was working with the Bacillus megaterium and discovered that it
produced PHB when nutrients were scarce and the conditions were ‘stressful’ for the bacteria.

4] Rudolf Jaenisch (born 1942) .He had a breakthrough in 1974 with the American scientist Beatrice
Mints when they created the first transgenic mouse. They showed that injecting retrovirus DNA into
mouse embryos led to the virus being integrated into the animal’s genome, a change that was also passed
to the offspring.
And Many More contributions are tributed
WHY PEOPLE SHOULD OPT THIS CAREER ?

• What are the benefits of studying biotechnology?

To generate pharmacological, diagnostic, agricultural, environmental, and other goods that
benefit society .Biotechnology uses living cells and biological materials. Animal genetic
information is also researched and altered in order to model and research human diseases.
“Due to Biotechnology, recently a birth of a human baby has made one of the biggest
achievements, because this baby is Immune from Mitochondrial Disease and more
advancements in this field will surely take humanity on better a level.”

Not only Economicaly but also, Critically, it is one of the best career to dive in.
CONCLUSION
• The application of biotechnology provides the researcher with new
knowledge and tools that make the job more efficient and effective.
• Also, the Biotechnologists in every sub-fields are paid well, and they
are the most important profession when it comes to Medical
advancements
• Hence, the Biotechnology should be limed light and used for the
greater good. This all factors do prove that, Biotechnology is more
important than we previously thought.
