QUARTER 3 MODULE 3

Structure of an
Atom
What is an atom?
• An atom is the fundamental
unit of a matter.

• It consist of an extremely
small positively charged
nucleus surrounded by a
cloud of negatively charged
electrons.
Structure of an Atom
Protons – positively charge
particles.

Electrons – negatively charge

particles.

Neutrons – are electrically

neutral.
GROUP ACTIVITY
DIRECTIONS: Create an atom based on recycled materials
such as pipe cleaners/strings, pompoms, paper clips, beads,
buttons, and the like.

Use creativity and artistry in constructing each model.

Why should we learn atomic structure?

Why it is important to study the atomic structure?

Electron Cloud Model was proposed by

Democritus and it shows that atom is just a
vast empty space.
Plum-Pudding Model was proposed by JJ Thompson
and it shows that atom is composed of negatively
charged particles called electrons which are embedded
all throughout the positive atom.
Nucleus Atomic Model was proposed by Ernest
Rutherford and it shows that atom is composed of a
very tiny dense central structure known as nucleus
which is made up of positively charged particles called
electrons.
Planetary Atomic Model was proposed by Neil Bohr
and it shows that electrons moved around the nucleus
with their specific orbitals which corresponds to energy
level.
There is an attraction between the nucleus
and the electrons of atom that is why they
don’t collide with each other. The evidence of
which is that energy is required to remove an
electron from an atom.
