Process of
production
Harvesting Cotton is plucked from the cotton plants.

Cleaning It is cleaned and the impurities are removed.

Large bales of cotton fiber are then transferred to

Spinning spinning mills. Spinning mills convert fiber in to yarns
(thread)

These yarns or thread cones are moved to Weaving.

Weaving Weaving is a process of interlacing yarns to make into
fabric.

Fabric that is weaved is then bleached and washed to

Bleaching clean it thoroughly.
Ideal conditions for
growing cotton
• Long vegetation periods (175 to 225 days)
without frost.
• Constant temperatures between 18 and
30°.
• Ample sunshine and fairly dry conditions.
• A minimum of 500 mm of water between
germination and boll formation.
• Deep, well-drained soils with a good
nutrient content.
Socio-Economic
impact of cotton
• It is well understood that cotton plays a
most significant role for many millions
of people around the world.
• Growing cotton provides work, and
work provides vital income.
• While it is often asserted that cotton
farming employs a substantial number
of people, and that this work is
important for these people’s
livelihoods, this situation is seldom well
described.
Uses of cotton
• Cotton fiber can be woven or knitted into fabrics such as
velvet, corduroy, chambray, velour, jersey and flannel.

• In addition to textile products like underwear, socks and t-

shirts, cotton is also used in fishnets, coffee filters, book
binding and archival paper.

• Cotton is a food and fiber crop. Cotton seed is fed to cattle

and crushed to make oil.

• This cottonseed oil is used for cooking and in products like

soap, margarine, emulsifiers, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals,
rubber and plastics.

Threats for Cotton
Industry
• Cotton is under constant threat from artificial fibers, and
presence of contamination is one of its main weaknesses.
• If this not controlled at the origin, it will have a serious
impact on the whole cotton industry in the long run.
• Spinners might prefer to spin artificial fiber yarns and
blends, rather than investing in expensive electronic
equipment and still running a high risk in spinning cotton
and its blends.
• It is high time for cotton growers, ginners and supporting
organizations to get together and act on this issue, especially
to minimize fibrous contaminants such as polypropylene,
colored threads, colored cloth pieces and hair.
Conclusion
• Cotton is a basic necessity of every one's life.
• It plays a very vital role in the Indian economy.
• It is generally termed as a major cash crop of India.
• It sustains the Indian cotton textile industry, which
constitutes the single largest segment of organized industries
in the country.
• In summary, cotton continues to play a critical role in
— producer livelihoods
— agricultural development processes
— national economic development
— maintaining foreign exchange revenues for a large number of
countries
— in the contribution of access to services and poverty reduction
