WHAT IS HIV?

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a

virus that attacks the body’s immune
system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead
to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency
syndrome).
WHERE DID HIV COME FROM?

HIV infection in humans came from

a type of chimpanzee in Central
Africa. Studies show that HIV may
have jumped from chimpanzees to
humans as far back as the late 1800s.
DISCRIMINATION ACTED UPON HIV/AIDS
WORKERS
HIV-related discrimination in employment occurs
at all stages of the employment relationship.
Examples of discriminatory practices include pre-
employment HIV testing, denial of employment
to people who test positive, dismissal, pressure to
resign, and harassment.
HIV/AID & WORKPLACE STIGMATIZATION

HIV stigma is negative attitudes and beliefs

about people with HIV. It is the prejudice that
comes with labeling an individual as part of a
group that is believed to be socially
unacceptable.
HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES:
•Believing that only certain groups of people
can get HIV
•Making moral judgments about people who
take steps to prevent HIV transmission
•Feeling that people deserve to get HIV
because of their choices
FIVE WAYS TO REDUCE STIGMA IN

4.DON'T BE AFRAID
5.REPORT TO STIGMAWATCH
IMPLEMENTING POLICIES

discrimination against people living with HIV in
the workplace “in any form from pre-employment
to post-employment, including hiring, promotion
or assignment, based on the actual, perceived or
suspected HIV status of an individual.”
