Online Collaboration

Cloud Computing
Cloud computing means storing and accessing data
and programs over the internet instead of your
computer’s hard disk.
Cloud computing allows multiple users to access
applications and data that reside on the internet
rather than on specific personal computers.
Cloud computing creates a new way to facilitate
collaboration and information access across great
geographical distance while reducing the overhead
associated with maintaining what was once an
expensive series of resources ( computers & software
license).
Understand ways in which cloud computing
facilitates online and mobile collaboration like:

Storage of shared documents and files - Multiple

users can access and edit files
Access to a range of online applications and tools -
Greater collaboration and communication possible
Storage of Shared Documents and Files

Rather than storing data locally on individual

computers or a company network, cloud computing
involves the delivery of data and shared recourses via
a secure and centralized remote platform.
Cloud storage advantages

Users will be able to access the data from any

location that has internet access
Users will not need to carry around a physical
storage device or use the same computer to save and
retrieve information.
Allow users to share the data with other people,
turning a personal project into a collaborative effort
where other members of the team can access and
edit shared files.
Access to range of online applications and tools

Applications of cloud computing are unlimited

Cloud computing system can execute all the
programs a normal computer can run
 word processing software
 customized computer programs designed for a specific
company.
Promotes collaboration between individuals and
business
Improves communication between parties

Examples of Cloud Computing applications and tools

DropBox
Google Drive
One Drive
Apple iCloud
Outline the benefits of cloud computing for
users like:

Reduced costs - Costs typically lower than installing

locally on a number of machines
Enhanced mobility - Applications can be used in any
location with Internet access
Scalability - Amount of space or applications used
can be increased or decreased as needed
Automatic updates - Updates can be made via the
cloud rather than through local installations
Reduced Costs

Biggest advantage of cloud computing

Cost effected method to use maintain & upgrade
Reduce the need for advanced hardware on the client
side
A company does not need to buy the fastest
computer with the most memory
A large hard drive is not needed
Reduce maintenance & hardware upgrading needs
Older computers can be used to access cloud services
Enhance Mobility

Clients are able to access their applications & data

from anywhere at any time
 Access the cloud using any computer linked to the internet
 Provides incredible flexibility as professionals can work from
any computing device anywhere if have access to the web
 Makes collaboration easier since co-workers & project teams
can work on shared information stored centrally in the cloud
Scalability

Almost unlimited storage capacity

Can increase your current storage place
Scalability is a built-in feature for cloud deployments
you only pay for the applications & data storage you
need
Comes elasticity since clouds can be scaled to meet
your changing IT system demands
Automatic Update

Services are automatically updated to be downloaded

Include up to date version of software and upgrades
to servers
Backing data up and restoring the data is relatively
easier than storing the data on a physical device

Outline the risks of cloud computing like:

Dependence on provider - Tied due to volume of

data held, convenience reasons, may not have
consistent service
Data protection and control - Threat of unauthorized
access or malware issues
Potential loss of privacy - More people may have
access to data
Dependence on provider

An internet connection is necessary to take full

advantage of a cloud service.
When you are offline or if there are any disruptions
with the cloud service it-self the data may be not
accessible at all.
Data protection and control

Biggest concerns about cloud computing is security.

Make sure that you choose the most reliable service
provider who will keep your info totally secure.
Malware distributors are embracing cloud service as
a method of hosting malicious codes and adware.
Potential loss of privacy

Privacy in the cloud is a huge issue.

If a client can log in from any location to access data
and application
 it is possible the client’s privacy cloud be compromised.
Cloud computing companies must protect client
privacy.
 Use authentication techniques (such as user name and
password)
 Employ an authorisation format where each user can access
only the data applications relevant to his or her job
