Died : Athens , Greece
Parents : Ariston of Athens , Perictione
Influenced by : Socrates, Pythagoras , Democritus
Era : Ancient Greek philosophy
Plato born and brought up in an wealthy family
and begins his carrier as a student of Socrates
He established his own school known as Academy
PLATO’S
EDUCATION
• Plato stated that education for all the citizens (man and women) of
the state
• Through education individual can develop their mental abilities and
can become respected units of state.

• Plato believes that the highest goal of educational curriculum is the


knowledge of good.
AIM OF
EDUCATION
• The total development of a man , min body and soul by using every
possible mean
• To develop leader among the future rulers
• To develop hard and competent workers
• To produce future civil servants of the state
• To nurture a man to a better human being in future
PRINCIPLES OF
EDUCATION
• Plato believed that education should focus on developing the
indivisual’s soul and character
• He emphasized the importance of moral and ethical education ,
aiming to cultivate virtues such as wisdom , courage , and justise
• According to plato , education should also promote critical thinking ,
• He believed that a well- rounded education would lead to a just and
harmonious society
METHODS OF
TEACHING
• He gave much more importance to nursery or primary education.
• In the elementary level he focuses on play method.
• He believe in the concept of learning by doing.
• He was against the concept of force education. And wants student
interest in education.
• Education should be both physical and mental growth.
EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM

• There are two stages of platonic educational curriculum; one is


elementary stage and another is higher stage.
• In the early stage individuals were like wax, and can be mold in any
shape.

PRIMARY
EDUCATION:
1. For plato , the primary education was till the age of eighteen and would be followed by
two years of compulsory military training and then followed by higher education
2. Plato believed that education began from the age of seven and before this, children
should stay with their mothers for moral education
3. He recognized that every school must have a gymnasium and playground in order to
develop the physical and health of the children and make them resistant to any disease
4. Gymnastics is essential for the physical and mental growth
5. The content of education comprised of gymnastics ,literature ,music and elementary
mathematics
HIGHER
EDUCATION
• According to Plato, at the age of 20, the child must take an examination that
would determine whether or not to pursue higher education.
• Plato emphasised that education must start early.
• Music is also considered as the medium of education
• Here students undergo mathematical training preparatory to systematic
reasoning.
• In this, Plato has highlighted the qualities needed for an individual to enter higher
education.
ROLE OF A
TEACHER
• A teacher has a most important role in shaping the life of a student.
• A teacher should guide the student constant.
• The person should be deep committed towards the profession of
teaching.
• He should have high sense of responsibility.
• The role of a teacher is to always teach the morally right thing.
PLATO’S CONTRIBUTION TO
EDUCATION
• Plato made significant contribution to the field of education are as follows :
1. Plato believed that true knowledge and understanding could be attained through
consideration of abstract ideas or forms .
2. He believed that students should engage in questioning , reasoning , and dialogue to arrive at
deeper understanding and truth.
3. He believed that teachers should be knowledgeable ,virtuous , and skilled in guiding students
towards wisdom and self- discovery.
4.He believed that education should not only focus on intellectual development but also on the
cultivation of moral virtues and character .
5. Plato’s contributions to education continue to influence educational theories and practices to
this day .
