INTRODUCTION
A variety of fly species exist and while these insects are
all considered a nuisance. Houseflies are widespread around
the world and inhabits near closeness to people (Tomberlin,
N.D.) The house fly Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae)
is the major pest species associated with accumulated animal
manure and a major concern for dairy, swine and poultry
operations as residential areas develop in rural farming
communities (Stafford, 2018)
INTRODUCTION
The development of this research will pave the way for
more studies on the use of different local fruit extracts as
organic insecticides and pest control treatments. Specifically,
it will serve as a foundation on future studies regarding the
effects of fruits such as the star gooseberry on pests like
common housefly. Additionally, it will help the farmers find
alternative and cheaper ways to control the pest infesting their
crops by using fruit extracts as insecticides. Lastly, it will aid
the plant growers to rely less on more expensive and harmful
chemicals as pest control treatments.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study aims to determine the

mortality rate of common housefly
(Musca domestica) with different
concentration of star gooseberry
(Phyllantus acidus) stock extract
solution.
MATERIALS & METHODS
MATERIALS
This study utilized a plastic
container in picking and gathering star
gooseberry fruits. It was also making use
of mortar and pestle, strainer, filter paper,
graduated container, and a stirrer in the
extraction process. Lastly, a plastic gallon
was utilized as a storage container for the
star gooseberry extract.
MATERIALS & METHODS
METHODS
This study was conducted at the campus
ground of Mindanao State University – General
Santos City. The study used a Completely
Randomize Design (CRD) with five treatments
and three replicates each treatment.
MATERIALS & METHODS
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN
This study was conducted in a Completely Randomize Design (CRD) with a

total of 5 treatments which replicated three (3) times. Each treatment and replication

have same 100ml of star gooseberry solution and same number of 10 common

houseflies with a total of 150 common housefly to be administered with the stock

solution.

T1 - Distilled water (Negative Control)

T2 – 50% star gooseberry stock solution

T3 – 75% star gooseberry stock solution

T4 – 100% star gooseberry stock solution

MATERIALS & METHODS
Experimental Layout and Randomization
The experiment was laid out
on a table with dimension of 2 m
by 1 m, equivalent total area of 2
square meters. The table area was
divided into 15 spaces, each
representing one replicate with one
container, and each replicate have
10 houseflies, with a 5 cm space
between containers.

DATA TO BE GATHERED

Mortality Rate MR (%) - The number of dead houseflies every 1 hour was counted. The

following formula were used:

MR (%) = x 100

Mortality percentage – Observed three hours based on the number of dead houseflies.

Percent Mortality = x 100

Survival time - The time when at least (1) insect died to be observed at 1 hour interval .

CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS
CONCLUSION
With the gathered data from the study recorded at DHF

on the first 3 hours of testing. The application of different

amount of star gooseberry stock extract have minimum

significant influence to the number of DHF, the most

significant response can be found at the T4R3 where the

average of number of DHF is the most significant.

CONCLUSION & RECOMMENDATIONS
RECOMMENDATION
The mortality rate of common housefly to the different
amount of star gooseberry extract stock solution needs more
research especially on the part where the number of time
needed for the stock solution to have a significant response
after administration to the housefly. This study is
recommended for further development under the same
condition.
