LIVER

CIRRHOSIS
BY GROUP 6
What is Liver Cirrhosis?
•Cirrhosis is scarring (fibrosis) of the liver caused by long-term liver damage.

•Damages your liver and interferes with its functioning and can lead to liver
failure.
•Sometimes called as end-stage liver disease.

•Alcohol and drugs, viruses and metabolic factors are the most common causes.
Signs and Symptoms
What are the first signs of cirrhosis of the liver?
•Nausea or loss of appetite.

•Feeling weak or tired.

•Feeling generally ill.

•Upper abdominal pain (especially on the right).

•Redness on the palms of your hands.

Sign and Symptoms
What are symptoms of advancing cirrhosis?
• Jaundice

• Spider angiomata or spider nervi

• Dark-colored pee and light-colored poop

• Ascites

• Gynecomastia

• Unexplained weight loss

• Hepatic encephalopathy (confusion, disorientation, mood changes)

Diagnostic Evaluation
How is cirrhosis of the liver diagnosed?
•Begin by physically examining signs and symptoms.

•Taking Medical History

•Questions about medications, supplements intake, diet and lifestyle.

•Medical Tests may include:

1. Blood Tests

2. Imaging Tests

3. Liver Biopsy
Diagnostic Evaluation
Imaging Tests includes:
•Ultrasound:
1. Often the first imaging modality used to evaluate liver cirrhosis.

2. It can show the liver's size, shape, and texture, as well as the presence of
nodules or abnormalities.

3. May not be as accurate as other imaging modalities for detecting early stages
of cirrhosis.
Diagnostic Evaluation
•Computed Tomography (CT) scan:
CT scans is useful for evaluating :

1. The extent of liver damage

2. Detect liver nodules or tumors

3. Assess complications of cirrhosis such as portal hypertension or ascites.

Diagnostic Evaluation
•Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan:
MRI is particularly useful for evaluating:

1. Liver lesions

2. Assessing liver function

3. Detecting complications of cirrhosis such as portal hypertension or ascites.

MRI is often used when a CT scan is not feasible.

Diagnostic Evaluation
•Elastography (Fibro Scan):
1. It measures the stiffness of the liver, which indicate the presence and
severity of liver fibrosis (scarring).

2. Uses ultrasound or MRI to measure liver stiffness.

3. Useful for accessing the extent of liver damage in cirrhosis.

Management
Medical Management:
•Rest

•Sodium Restricted

•Antacid

•Antibiotics

•Alcohol Restriction
Management
Surgical Management:
•Trans jugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt

•Liver Transplantation
