BHEL, JHANSI
Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Jhansi is a
factory and township in Uttar Pradesh, India.
It was founded on 9 January 1974 and is one
of the 17 manufacturing units of the Bharat
Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)
Corporation. It is located on NH-26, 15 km
south of Jhansi city.
VISION
A world class engineering
enterprise committed to
enhancing stakeholder value.

ROTATION Store
It is one of the prime departments of material
management department. There are separate stores

REPORT for different types of material in the BHEL.

Main aim behind the rotation of various Fabrication

departments is that one can understand the Fabrication is nothing but production by
assembling. In this shop firstly basic components
working of each and every department and how
are collected and prepared and then they are
all these departments coordinate with each other
assembled to get required structure.
for smooth running of such large industrial
organization.
Transformer Manufacturing
ROTATION Transformer Engineering
The designing of all these transformers is done by
the TRE department according to the specification

REPORT of the customer’s

Technology
To be continued..... This department analysis the changes taking place
in technology and manufacturing processes in the
world and suggest changes and upgrades
accordingly.

Transformer Commercial
The objective of this department is to interact with
the customers. It brings out tenders & notices &
also responds to them.
Locomotive Commercial

ROTATION The main objective of this department is

interaction with customer. It brings out tender and
notices and also responds to them. It bags the

REPORT contracts to manufacture locos

Locomotive Manufacturing
To be continued.....
Locomotive manufacturing has two sections:
i. Bogie Shop
ii. Assembly Shop

Locomotive Engineering
It takes the technical specification of the job as
required by the customer from commercial
department and prepares the drawings taking all
the constraints into consideration.
ROTATION Quality Control
There is central quality service department whose
duty is to ensure that final product maintains

REPORT quality & satisfy customer needs.

To be continued..... Transformer Testing

In transformer testing section there are for MG
sets. The electrical specifications of the entire test
are given.

Work, Enginnering & Sevices

As the name suggest this section deals with
services & maintenance.
FABRICATION
Metal Fabrication
It is the building of metal structures by
cutting, bending, and assembling processes. It
is a value added process that involves the
construction of machines and structures from
various raw materials.
MANUFACTURING PROCESSES
Manufacturing starts with preparation of individual parts before assembly, in Bay 0

• The metal is first marked and cut by

• Hydraulic Bending
the following machines:-
Bending from rolled sheets
• Guillotine Shearing machine and shapes.
• CNC Flame cutting machine • Straightening and Roll Bending
• Combination punch
• Finished parts are

• Shear and Bar cutters inspected at the working

• Straightening plates and
• Circular saw large sized blanks. place.

• Bar shears • Bending rolled beams and

angles.
MANUFACTURING PROCESSES
After Preparation is complete the next step is Assembly and Welding is as follows:

• Components of units are • Manual arc welding is employed • Carbon-di-Oxide

assembled and tack welded for in restricted and inaccessible shielded arc welding
subsequent welding as per places or where semi-automatic is (MIG) is used for
drawing and instructions on not possible or has not been increased productivity
process cards. established. and better quality.
MIG SHIELDED METAL-
ARC WELDING
MIG welding is welding in an atmosphere of
reacting gases, or as it is also called: shielded
by an active gas. This means that the gas is
separated in the arc and to a smaller or larger
extent reacts with the weld pool. CO2 is
mainly used as shielding gas which is why the
process is also known as CO2 welding.

WELD DEFECTS

• Porosity • Lack of Fusion

• Cracks • Non-metallic inclusion

• Undercutting • Spatter-on work on nozzle in

• Lack of Penetration weld

• Irregular weld shape
CNC FLAME
CUTTING
CNC Machine
CNC stands for “Computer Numerated
Control”. A CNC machine directs a cutting
tool, based on directions that the operator has
entered into a computer that controls the
movement of the head holding the tool.
HOW TO USE A TYPICAL CNC
MACHINE
• Develop or obtain the 3D geometric model of the part, using CAD.

• Run CAM software to generate the CNC par program.

• Verify and edit program.

• Download the part program to the appropriate machine.

• Verify the program on the actual machine and edit if necessary.

• Run the program and produce the part.

BASIC CONCEPT OF PART
PROGRAMMING
• Part programming contains geometric data about the part and motion information to move the cutting tool with respect

to the work piece. Basically, the machine receives instructions as a sequence of blocks containing commands to set
machine parameters; speed, feed and other relevant information. A block is equivalent to a line of codes in a part

program.
PREPARATORY COMMAND
(G CODE)
The G codes prepare the MCU for given operation, typically involving a cutter motion.

• G00 - Rapid motion • G20 - Circular Interpolation

• G01 - Linear Interpolation. • G28 - Automatic return to reference

• G06 - Parabolic Interpolation point.

• G17 - XY Plane Selection • G33 -Thread Cutting
MISCELLANEOUS COMMANDS (M
CODE)
• M00 – Program Stop.

• M03 – Start Spindle Rotation (CW).

• M06 – Tool Change.

• M07 – Turn Coolant ON.
