 INTRODUCTION
• Cervical carcinoma continues to be a significant health care
problem. In developing countries, where health care resources are
limited, cervical carcinoma is the second most frequent cause of
death due to carcinoma in women.
• Cervical neoplasm is one of the few sites of neoplastic disease with
long preclinical development. As cervical cancer is preceeded by
abnormal squamous cells of the malpighian epithelium or glandular
cells of endocervical epithelium, covered under the generic name of
preinvasive cervical lesions or cervical pre cancerous lesions.
• These include a spectrum of changes that begins with minimum
irregular progression to marked intraepithelial abnormalities and
then to invasive carcinoma.
• Invasive cancer of cervix has been considered a preventable
cancer because it has a long pre-invasive state.
• This is characterized microscopically as a spectrum of events
progressing from cellular atypia to various grades of dysplasia
or cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN) before progression to
invasive carcinoma.
• The anatomical accessibility of the cervix to direct
examination, with a long preclinical stage during which
precursor lesions can be treated conservatively and
successfully , make cervical neoplasia ideal for screening.
 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
• To compare the efficacy of various screening
methods -Pap smear , visual inspection of
cervix with acetic acid, visual inspection of
cervix with lugol’s iodine and colposcopy for
detection of pre invasive and invasive lesions
of carcinoma cervix.
 PATIENTS AND METHODS
• STUDY POPULATION
All married woman and woman with history of onset of
sexual intercourse attending to opd of Obstetrics and
Gynaecology at chalmeda anandrao institute of medical
sciences, karimnagar .
• SAMPLE SIZE – 100
• STUDY DESIGN – Cross sectional study
• DURATION OF STUDY – 18 months
 INVESTIGATIONS

• All women enrolled in the study will undergo

Pap smear, VIA, VILI, Colposcopy.
• The results of these tests will be compared
and the efficacy of Pap smear, VIA, VILI will be
assessed taking Colposcopy as gold standard.
 INCLUSION CRITERIA
• All married women and women with history
of onset of sexual intercourse attending to
OPD of CAIMS, KARIMNAGAR.
 EXCLUSION CRITERIA

• 1. Women who have undergone hysterectomy for

non invasive lesions of cervix/uterus.
• 2. Women who have never had sexual intercourse
in their life.
• 3. Women with frank invasive carcinoma cervix.
• 4. Pregnant women.
• 5.Patients not willing to give consent for
examination.
