Name : Dr. G. R. JYOTHI

Designation : Lecturer
Branch : D.C.C.P.
Institute : SGMGPT, Abdullahpurmet
Year : III semester
Subject : Quantitative Techniques-I
Subject code : CCP-303
Topic : Median
Sub topic : Calculation of Median
Duration : 50 mts
Teaching Aids: : PPT, Animation

CCP303.32 11
Objectives:

On completion of this period, you would be

able to:
 Calculate Median for Individual series
(ungrouped data)

CCP303.32 2
Recap
 Median is “middle-most value of the variables
that are arranged in order of magnitude”

 Median is denoted by M
 Statistical series: “things or attributes of things
arranged according to some logical order”.
 Statistical series is divided into grouped data
and ungrouped data

CCP303.32 3
Median - Ungrouped data

 If the number of values, ‘ n ‘, in data is odd, then

Median will be (n+1)/2th value arranged in
ascending (or) descending order
 In this case there will be one and only one value
of Median

CCP303.32 4
Median - Ungrouped data

 If ‘ n ‘ is even, then the data arranged in

ascending (or) descending order, will have two
middle-most values
 Here, any value between these two middle-
most values is Median

CCP303.32 5
Calculation of Median
Individual Series
Steps:
 Arrange the data in ascending order or descending
order
 Calculate Median using the formula:
M = Size of (N+1)/2 th item
where M = Median
N = Total number of items

CCP303.32 6
Example 1:

From the following data of the weekly wages of 7

workers compute Median wage:
Wages (in Rs.): 200 300 160 180 320
400 280

CCP303.32 7
Solution to Ex.1

Calculation Of Median
S.No. Wages arranged
In ascending order
1 160
2 180
3 200
4 280
5 300
6 320
7 400

CCP303.32 8
Solution contd

Median = Size of (N+1)/2th item

= Size of (7+1)/2th item
= Size of 8/2th item
= Size of 4th item

Size of 4th item = 280

Hence Median wage = Rs. 280

Note: Here, value of ‘N’ is ODD, hence Median is only one central value

CCP303.32 9
Example 2:
From the following data of the wages of 7 workers
compute the median wage:
Wages (in Rs.): 1100 1150 1080 1120 1200
1160 1400

CCP303.32 10
Solution 2
Calculation Of Median
S.No. Wages arranged
In ascending order
1 1080
2 1100
3 1120
4 1150
5 1160
6 1200
7 1400

CCP303.32 11
Solution contd

Median = Size of (N+1)/2th item

= Size of (7+1)/2th item
= Size of 8/2th item
= Size of 4th item
Size of 4th item = 1150
Hence median wage = Rs. 1150

CCP303.32 12
Example 3:
Obtain the value of Median from the following data:

391, 384, 591, 407, 672, 522, 777, 753, 2488, 1490

CCP303.32 13
Solution 3
CALCULATION OF MEDIAN
S.No. Data arranged in ascending order (X)
1 384
2 391
3 405
4 522
5 591
6 672
7 753
8 777
9 1490
10 2488
CCP303.32 14
Solution contd
Median = Size of (N+1)/2th item
= Size of (10+1)/2th item
= Size of 11/2th item
= Size of 5.5th item

Size of 5.5th item = (5th item + 6th item)/2

= (591 + 672)/2
= 1263/2
= 631.5
Hence Median = 631.5

CCP303.32 15
Summary
 Median is middle-most value of the variables
that are arranged in order
 Median for ungrouped data = Size of (n+1)2th
observation provided the observations are
arranged in either ascending (or) descending
order
