METHODS AND

STRATEGIES IN TEACHING
THE ARTS AND ARTISTIC
SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES
TO CONTEMPORARY ART
CREATION
GROUP 6
In Central VIsayas Region, there
are contemporary artists who
became known for their work in the
field of dramatic arts, film, and
cinema. One of those is Amiel Yanson
Leonardia, an acclaimed theater
director and Outstanding SIllimanian
for Theater Arts. He gave a lecture on
"The Arts of Theater Directing" under
the Albert Faurot Lecture Series for
Culture and The Arts.
Another one is, Francis Makil Ignacio, a
theatre, TV and film actress who was born
in Dumaguete City. She started to peform at
age of 4 and studied ballet with the Siliiman
Univesity Junior Dance Troupe until she was
8.
And so, it is essential in the region and
in the school respectively to teach and gear
up the students about dramatic arts since
most of the activity given is related to
drama.
METHODS AND STRATEGIES IN TEACHING
THE ARTS
Questions "What" and "How" should be considered.

> Knowledge about the contemporary art

> Suitable methods that makes learning becomes

effective
According to Roucher & Lovano-Kerr in 1995, the
following methods that are suitable in teaching
contemporary arts:
1. Brainstorming
2. Seminar
3. Project method
4. Role playing
5. Study trips
6. Workshops
7. Experiential learnings
8. Practice
9. Self reflection and others
1. Brainstorming

Brainstorming is a group activity where each participant

shares their ideas as soon as they come to mind. At the
conclusion of the session, ideas are categorised and ranked
for follow-on action. When planning a brainstorming session
it is important to define clearly the topic to be addressed. The
goal of brainstorming is to generate many ideas quickly, and
“out-of-the-box” thinking can be encouraged.
2. Seminar

Seminars are small group discussions organised and led by

staff. The purpose of a seminar is to enable students to
improve their knowledge and understanding of a topic by
engaging with key issues - participation is therefore
necessary and successful participation involves preparation.
Seminars allow you to expand your knowledge and stay
current with technological advancements.
3. Project Method

Students in a project method environment should be

allowed to explore and experience their environment
through their senses and, in a sense, direct their own
learning by their individual interests. Very little is taught
from textbooks and the emphasis is on experiential learning,
rather than rote and memorization. A project method
classroom focuses on democracy and collaboration to solve
"purposeful" problems.
4. Role Play

Role play is a form of experiential learning. Students

take on assigned roles and act out those roles through a
scripted play. Role-playing may also refer to role training
where people rehearse situations, alone or with others,
in preparation for a future performance and to improve
their abilities within a role.
5. Study Trips

A study trip is trip or tour taken by a group of people in order to study

something. Study Tours take you beyond the classrooms or meeting
rooms so that you get hands-on learning experience. Going on a study
trip enhances their critical thinking skills and gives students a chance to
think about a topic or theme from a different perspective. A school trip
gives students the chance to experience new venues.
6. Workshops

A workshop is a gathering of people for the purpose of learning,

practicing, or discussing a specific topic or skill. Art workshops
are focused on painting, drawing, photography, etc. Workshops
are designed to engage participants and foster their active
involvement in the process.
7. Experiential Learnings

Experiential learning is the process of learning by doing. By engaging

students in hands-on experiences and reflection, they are better able to
connect theories and knowledge learned in the classroom to real-world
situations.
8. Practice

It is the act of doing something regularly or repeatedly to improve your

skill at doing it. Practice is very crucial in becoming an artist. If consider
practicing a hobby, it can greatly develop one's skill over time. It is a
very common step to take in order to gain mastery. Practicing with the
available materials and with people to guide you can be effective, just
make sure to be consistent and make it a routine.
9. Self Reflection

Self-reflections are a way for students to document what they have

accomplished and what they have learned. They can engage with
artistic thinking about how they envision their work or discover what
skills they need to develop. It’s also a way to document ideas the
current work may inspire. Students can find solutions to design
problems they will encounter later in art class or other contexts later
in life.
