COMMUNITY FOR THE

ELDERLY
“WITHOUT A SENSE OF CARING THERE WILL BE NO SENSE OF
COMMUNITY.”
NEED OF THE PROJECT
• It is estimated that the 60+ population in India would touch
326 million in 2050.
• Majority of the old age campuses that are existing today
are isolated, and elders are separated from the main
stream community.
• Elders are made to live a life of isolation with other elders
as if they are punished for being an elder.
• Need to study the psychological and physical needs of the
elderly, and specifically as to how the elders could be made
INCLUSIVE to the mainstream community rather than being
excluded.
• Therefore, there is a need for the project that through
architectural interventions, the needs of the elderly are
taken care, and INCLUDING the elders into the main stream
community.
AIM OF THE PROJECT
• Provide a community for the elders which
caters to the psychological, physical and social
needs of the elderly.
• Explore an approach which is inclusive to the
main stream community rather than exclusion.
• The thesis would aim at a holistic approach
through architecture addressing the above
issues, and targeting the group enumerated
above. The conclusion of the thesis may not be
an immediate solution but an approach that
could be further studied, and this
study/approach could be a start.
OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
• To understand the design of the
environment and needs in a home for the
elderly where all their needs are taken care
of and they are provided with all medical
facilities in case of any emergency.
• To understand the problems faced by the
elders as users and designing according to
their needs.
• To study the recreational facilities for the
elderly.
SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
• Geriatric hospital
• Independent living units for the elders
• Assisted care living units for the elders
• 24hr care units for long term care for the
elders
• Dormatory for the nursing staff/care givers
and the doctors

CONCLUSIONS FROM THE CASE STUDY
• All the places were far off from the city limits.
• Transportation was difficult and public transport was not enough.
• Hospitals were very far off.
• Shops were not there close by, they have to come into the city and buy.
• As they are far off from the city, it is difficult to access or for people to
come to the city in case of a medical emergency, fire etc.
• Security for the elders in such isolated lonely places is questionable.
• Some of the places are located near the industrial area, so theres a lot of
pollution there.
