INTRODUCTION TO HADITH
Literal Meaning of Hadith:
The literal meaning of Hadith is “to happen”, “to inform”,
“report”, “speech” and “discussion”.

Terminological Meaning of Hadith:

In Islamic terminology every saying, deed and sermon
delivered or any act done in the presence of Rasulullah
‫ ﷺ‬and he did not express his dissent is called Hadith.
The plural of Hadith is Ahadith in Arabic.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HADITH & SUNNAH
Sunnah is always an act of the prophet, ‫ﷺ‬, while a hadith
is a report of his statement, act, silent approval or an
incident that took place in his life.
Sunnah has come down to us from generation to
generation while hadith has been reported, in most cases,
by one individual to another.

Sunnah is clear in what it stands for where as the context of

a hadith had to be understood and interpreted.
COMPONENTS OF HADITH
Hadith, in general, is made up of three basic components:

1. SNAD or ISNAD (Sequence of Reporters): This is the

chain of narrators through which the Hadith has
spread.

2. TARAF (Introductory Text): This is the beginning of the

text which refers to the actions or characteristics of the
Holy Prophet ‫ﷺ‬.

3. MATN (Content): This is the main text of the Hadith, or

the actual speech of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬.
TYPES OF HADITH
According to the nature of Hadith:
‫ق‬
1. Hadith Qawli (‫)حدی ِث ولی‬: Which is based on the words of
the Messenger of ‫ ف‬Allah‫ ﷺ‬.
2. Hadith Faili (‫)حدی ِث علی‬: Which is based on the actions of
the Messenger of Allah‫ﷺ‬ .
3. Hadith Tqreeri(‫
‫ ض‬The actions or words of the
Companions ‫ر ی ہللا ع ہم‬, which happened in the
presence of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, and he maintained them,
or when someone's action was mentioned in front of the
Prophet ‫ﷺ‬,he kept silent about it and did not prohibit
to do so.
TYPES OF HADITH
According to the number of reporters :
1. Mutawatir: is a Hadith which is reported by such a large
number of people that they cannot be expected to
agree upon a lie.
2. Ahad: is a Hadith which is narrated by people whose
number does not reach that of the Mutawatir.
3. Mash'hur: is a Hadith reported by more than two
reporters.
4. Aziz: is a Hadith reported by only two reporters at all
stages.
5. Gharib: At some stage of the isnad, only one reporter is
found relating it.

HUJIYET ‫( جحی ت‬AUTHORITY OF) HADITH
Just as the Qur'an is a proof in the laws of the Sharia, so is
the Hadith. As Allah Almighty‫ ُق‬says: ‫َو‬
“And he does not speak out of his own whim/desire. But it
is only what is revealed to him.”
“Whatever the Messenger gives you, accept it. And
whatever he forbids you, abstain from it.”

says:
He who obeys the Messenger (‫)ﷺ‬, has indeed obeyed
Allah.

things from the way is charity. (Bukhari & Muslim)

from door to door, begging and is turned away with a
morsel or two or with a date or two. But a needy person is
the one who does not have enough to live upon, and
neither from his appearance it occurs that he is needy and
should be given alms, nor does he himself beg anything
from others. (Bukhari & Muslim)

Hazrat Nu'man bin Bashir (‫ )ر ی ہللا ع ہ‬reported: The
Messenger of Allah (‫ ))ﷺ‬said:
What is lawful is clear and what is unlawful is clear, but
between them are certain doubtful things which many
people do not know. So he who guards against doubtful
things keeps his religion and his honour blameless. But he
who falls into doubtful things falls into that which is
unlawful, just as a shepherd who grazes his cattle in the
vicinity of a pasture declared prohibited (by the king); he is
likely to stray into the pasture. Mind you, every king has a
protected pasture and Allah's involved limits is that which
He has declared unlawful. Verily, there is a piece of flesh in
the body, if it is healthy, the whole body is healthy, and if it
is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Verily, it is the heart.
