WHY DO
RESEARCHERS NEED
TO DETERMINE THE
RATE OF GROWTH
OF A TUMOR?
•The volume of a sphere of radius 𝑟,
is 𝑉(𝑟)=(4/3)𝜋𝑟 . Here, 𝑟 changes with time,
3

so 𝑉 changes with time. We indicate this

chain of dependencies with the
notation 𝑟(𝑡) and V(𝑟(𝑡))

V(r(t))=4/3𝜋[r(t)] 3

THEN, USING THE CHAIN
RULE,
But we are told that the
radius expands at a
constant rate, 𝑘, so that

Since our r= 1, therefore, the

rate of change of volume is;

WHAT IS THE
CHAIN RULE?
THE CHAIN RULE IS USED TO
CALCULATE THE DERIVATIVE OF A
COMPOSITE FUNCTION. THE CHAIN
RULE FORMULA STATES F'(𝑥) =
F'(G(𝑥)).G'(𝑥),
WHERE F(𝑥) = F(G(𝑥)). G(𝑥) IS THE INNER
FUNCTION AND F(𝑥) IS THE OUTER
FUNCTION
THE CHAIN RULE IS USED
WHEN A FUNCTION IS
WITHIN ANOTHER FUNCTION .

In words, the chain rule requires finding

the derivative of the outer function,
while keeping the inner function the
same and then multiplying this by the
derivative of the inner function
12
To use the chain rule, the
following rules are
required:
The function must be a
composite function of two
or more functions.

Such functions must be

differentiable themselves.
HOW TO DO THE
CHAIN RULE?
To do the chain rule:
• Differentiate the outer
function, keeping the inner
function the same.
• Multiply this by the
derivative of the inner
function.
FOR EXAMPLE:

DIFFERENTIATE (4𝑥 – 3) 5 USING THE

CHAIN RULE
DIFFERENTIATE COS(2 𝑥 ) USING
THE CHAIN RULE
DIFFERENTIATE SIN^4(2 𝑥 )
USING THE CHAIN RULE
FIND THE DERIVATIVE OF THE FF.
FUNCTIONS:

 F( 𝑥 ) = (5 𝑥 + 1) 3
QUI
Z

1.True or False: The chain rule is used to

differentiate composite functions.
2.Fill in the blank: The chain rule states
that if y = f(g(x)), then dy/dx = _______.
3. Multiple Choice: Which rule is used to
differentiate a function that is composed of two
or more functions?
a. Power Rule b. Product Rule
c. Chain Rule d. Quotient Rule

4. Calculate the derivative of y = (3x2 + 2x - 1)4

concerning x.
ASSIGNMENT:

following functions:

 f(𝑥) = (4x−x2)10
