Team Goals For

Higher Productivity :
Characteristics of a Team?
• A ME goal turns into a WE goal
• The most important ingredient
we put into any team is:
– not what we say
– what we do
Who we are

• The place to begin building any

team is:
– inside ourselves
– our own character
Unit – 6:
BUILDING THE EMOTIONAL
TRUST ACCOUNT = STRONG
TEAM
1. UNDERSTAND THE TEAM MEMBER
(This is the key to every other deposit)

• What may be a deposit for you might not be perceived by

someone else as a deposit. It may be perceived as a withdrawal
• What is important to another person must be important to you.
We must accept the value that person places on what he has to
say, you show an understanding of him and that makes a great
deposit.
Understand the Individual:
• PARADIGM:
– Our perception of reality, our view of the
world.
– Like a pair of glasses-it affects the way you
see everything in life
– The source of your attitude from which your
behavior flows
– We assume that the way we “see” things is
the way they really are or the way they
should be
What you see
affects what you
think

What you think

affects what you
feel

What you feel

affects what you do
EMPATHY
• Seek first to understand and then to be
understood  Empathetic Listening
• We typically seek first to be understood
• Most people do not listen with the intent to
understood, they listen with the intent to reply
• They are either speaking or preparing to speak
• You need to get inside their head to see what is
really going on inside your world
BUT we look inside our own head and think we
see their world.
Attend To The Small Things:
• The little kindness and courtesies that you
show to any team member are very
important
• Small discourtesies, little unkindness’s, little
form of disrespect make large withdrawal.
• In tem relationships the small things are the
important things.
Keep Commitments:
– Keeping a commitment or a promise to a
team member is a major deposit.
– Breaking a commitment is a major withdrawal
– His is a huge withdrawal tom make a
commitment that is important to someone
and then not to keep it. He next time a
promise is made they will not believe you.

Clarify Expectations:
• Difficulties occur if team members have
different assumptions regarding whose role it
was to do a certain job.
• Relationship difficulties is rooted in unclear
expectations around goals and roles.
• Unclear expectations lead to
misunderstanding, disappointment and
withdrawal of trust.
• In a new situation make the expectations clear
and explicit in the beginning.
Show Personal Integrity:
• Integrity goes beyond honesty
• Be loyal to those who are not present.
When we do so we build the trust of
those who are present.
• When we defend those who are absent,
you retain the trust of those who are
present
Apologize Sincerely When You
Make A Mistake
• When we make a mistake (withdrawal) from the
Emotional Trust Account we need to apologize
sincerely.
• Great deposits come in sincere words
• A person must possess a deep sense of security
to apologize. A person with a little security
cannot do it. It makes them too vulnerable.
• When problems are resolved, team
relationships are strengthened.

Reactive Model

Stimulus Response

The basic idea is that we are conditioned to

respond in particular way to a particular
stimulus.
Reactive Language
• “But what can I do?

• I must

• If only

• If I had

• “They made me do this.”

•“I have to do this”

Four Unique
Endowments
1. SELF AWARENESS:
you can stand apart from your own
past and look at it.

2. IMAGINATION:
you can envision your future; you
can create a goal.

3. CONSCIENCE:
you have the internal sense, a
monitor inside you, that tells you
what is right and what is wrong.

4. INDEPENDENT WILL:
the power to act on the other three.
90/10 Principle
• 10% of life is made up of what
happens to you
 You really have NO CONTROL

THE GOAL.”
• I am proactively making a
choice to go for a new goal.

• I am proactively making a
choice to make a change in

The Security factor
• Most people tend to get their
security, from what other
people think of them

Unit -4

THE PUBLIC VICTORY

YOUR LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Understanding the Public Victory

2. Recognizing the different habits involved in the Public Victory
3. Understanding Habit # 4 –Think win, win
4. Understanding Habit # 5 –Seek first to understand, then to be understood.
5. Understanding Habit # 6-Synergize
THE PUBLIC VICTORY

The next 3 habits represent the public victory:

Habit # 4-Think win, win

Habit # 5-Seek first to understand, Then to be understood
Habit # 6-Synergize

PUBLIC VICTORY IS THE PART

WE INVOLVE OTHER
IN OUR GOALS
A “WE” GOAL, NOT A “MY” GOAL

The difference between a “we” goal and a “me” goal, is the

difference between the private victory the “me” goal & the
public victory the “we” goal.
HABIT # 4
THINK WIN/WIN
(Involving others in your goals)

When you have a small team, you are

involving others and then you become
“accountable” to them.

A group of friends or family that you are

accountable to, becomes so vital and
important.

Because when you know you are accountable

to somebody you know you’ll do something
that you otherwise wouldn’t do simply
because you want to keep your commitment
to that person.
A MIGHTY IMPACT

A win lose situation for each

of them became a win/win
situation for both of them.
WIN/WIN DEFINED

• Win/win means the agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial,

mutually satisfying.
• With a win/win solution, all parties feel good about the decision and
feel committed to the action plan.
• Win/win is based on the paradigm that there is plenty for everyone,
that one person’s success is not achieved at the expense of the other.
• Win/win is the belief that’s it is not your way; it is not my way; it is a
better way, it is a higher way
AVOIDING THE PITFALL

(i) Do not get entangled with:

(i) win, lose people,
(ii) lose/win people,
(iii) lose/lose people
(iv) win people

(ii) Establish a “we” goal only with win/win people.

.
HABIT # 5 Defined
Seek first to understand, then to be understood

“Seek first to understand” involves a very deep shift in paradigm. We

typically seek first to be understood.

Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with
the intent to reply.

They’re either speaking or preparing to speak.

They’re filtering everything through their own paradigms, reading their

autobiography into other people’s lives.
SYNERGY

Unit-5

HABIT # 7
SHARPENING THE SAW
YOUR LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Understanding Habit # 7- “Sharpening the saw.”

2. Recognizing the ultimate goal in your life
3. Implementing the ultimate goal in your life.
HABIT # 7
SHARPEN THE SAW
SHARPEN THE SAW
“Can’t you understand, I’m trying to saw down this tree, I
don’t have time to sharpen the saw.”

“Yes, but if you sharpen the saw,

the saw, would, saw faster.”
You could accomplish so much more
in so much less time.”
YIUR GREATEST ASSET-YOU
• Habit # 7 surrounds the other 7 habits because it is the habit
that makes all the other habits possible.

• Habit # 7 is personal PC. It preserves and enhances the

greatest asset you have-you.

• It is renewing the 4 dimensions of your nature-physical,

spiritual, mental and emotional.

• We are the only instrument we have with which to deal with

life and to contribute. Therefore, we need to recognize the
importance of taking time regularly to sharpen the saw.
SHARPEN THE SAW IN 4 WAYS

Remember again the four parts of our nature.

You constantly sharpen the saw in four ways.

If I were to select only one goal, this would

be the one I would recommend
THE GOAL- THE BODY
THROUGH PHYSICAL EXERCISE,
WITH PROPER EATING
THE GOAL- THE MIND
READING, STUDYING The world is changing so
powerfully. The half life of
THROUGH DISCIPLINED STUDY most professions, most
occupations is just
a few years.

The school of the future

is adult education.

Constant reading, study,

Disciplined study. Maybe for a
half hour, maybe an
hour a day.
THE GOAL-THE HEART
RELATIONSHIPS
THROUGH SECURITY

Maybe at the dinner table you can discuss what you are learning.

Maybe involve other people at the dinner table so that everyone is in the spirit of a learning
method.

Then you go into the whole idea of keeping relationships tuned, strong, healthy, viable, open
so people are kind to each other; respectful of each other.

When they are not they apologize to each other

THE GOAL-THE HEART

RELATIONSHIPS
THROUGH SECURITY

Where do they get the internal security to say “I’m sorry” ?

You get your internal security from within the private victory. You don’t get it from
without. It comes from within you, so you can say, “I’m sorry that was unkind of me,
I over reacted, I lost my cool, I was wrong.” “I apologize Mom” “I apologize my
friend, my wife, my work associate, that was wrong of me.” and you can do it
sincerely.
THE GOAL- THE SPIRIT
MAKING A DIFFERENCE,
CONTRIBUTING THROUGH INTEGRITY

This has to do with your spirit, what gives your life meaning,
purpose.
Why do you want to be healthy? So that you can do work, so that
you
. can contribute, make a difference! To make a difference, to
have meaning, and you must do it with integrity.

Because ends and means are inseparable.

INTEGRITY

“You’ll never
accomplish a
worthy end with
an unworthy
means, you will
not”
MISTAKES-I’M NO GOOD
Get back on track

No, you change, you get back, on track.

Just like a pilot gets back on track and arrives at the destination.

But most the time, that pilot is not on track. They’re off most of the time, and
any pilot will admit it. But they have a feedback mechanism, that keeps
correcting them until they arrive at their destination, usually pretty much on
time.

And that’s what you have, you have this capacity. You have an enormous
ability to choose.
YOUR GREATEST GIFT
• The power of choice is your greatest gift.

• And it’s made up of those four other unique qualities,

• self-awareness,
• imagination,
• conscience, and
• independent will
You have completed this lesson and learned the
following objectives

1. Understanding Habit # 7- “Sharpening the saw.”

is a changeless sense of who you are,
what you are about and what you value
Is the script you are living in harmony with your values?
Habit 3:
Put first things first
The key to time
management is not to
prioritize what’s on your
schedule but to schedule
your priorities
It’s almost impossible to say NO to the popularity of
urgent, non important matters, if you don’t have a bigger

GREAT INSIGHT OF HUMAN MOTIVATION

If all the air were

suddenly sucked
out of the room you
are in right now,
what would happen
to your interest in
this training
“SATISFIED NEEDS DO NOT MOTIVATE.”
•You would not care about the training,
you would not care about anything
except getting air. Survival would be
your only motivation.

•But now that you have air, it does not

motivate you. This is one of the
greatest insights of human motivation.

•“Satisfied needs do not motivate.”

•It is only the unsatisfied need that

motivates.
“PSYCHOLOGICAL AIR.”
• After physical survival, the greatest need of a
human being is psychological survival-
• to be understood,
• to be affirmed,
• to be validated,
• to be appreciated.

• Empathetic listening is giving the other

“psychological air.”

• And after that need is met, you can focus on

influencing or problem solving.
SUCCESSS
COMING TOGETHER
IS A BEGINNING

KEEPING TOGETHER
IS PROGRESS
AND
WORKING TOGETHER
IS SUCCESS”
PRIVATE VICTORY PRECEDES
PUBLIC VICTORY
• The most important ingredient we put into any team is not what we
say or what we do, BUT WHAT WE ARE.

• So the place to begin building any team is inside ourselves, inside

our own circle of influence, our own character
1. UNDERSTAND THE TEAM MEMBER
(This is the key to every other deposit)

• What may be a deposit for you might not be perceived by

someone else as a deposit. It may be perceived as a withdrawal
• What is important to another person must be important to you.
We must accept the value that person places on what he has to
say, you show an understanding of him and that makes a great
deposit.
2. ATTEND TO LITTLE THINGS

• The little kindness and courtesies that you show to team

members are so important.

• Small discourtesies, little unkindnesses, little forms of disrespect

make large withdrawals.

• In team relationships the little things are the large things.

3. KEEP COMMITMENTS

• Keeping a commitment or a promise to team members is a

major deposit. Breaking one is a major withdrawal.
 This is a massive withdrawal to make a promise that is
important to someone and then not to keep it.
The next time a promise is made they will not believe you
4. CLARIFY EXPECTATIONS

• You might encounter difficulty if you and your team members had
different assumptions regarding whose role it was to do a certain job.
• The cause of almost all relationship difficulties is rooted in conflicting
or
ambiguous expectations around roles and goals.
• Whether you are dealing with the question of who does what at work,
we
can be certain that unclear expectations will lead to misunderstanding,
disappointment and withdrawal of trust.
• It is important whenever you come into a new situation to get all the
5. SHOW PERSONAL INTEGRITY
Integrity goes beyond
honesty.

One of the most important

ways to manifest integrity
is to be loyal to those who
are not present.

When we do so, we build

the trust of those who are
present.

When we defend those who

are absent, you retain the
trust of those who are
6. APOLOGIZE SINCERELY WHEN
YOU MAKE A WITHDRAWAL

• When we make a withdrawal from the Emotional Trust Account

we need to apologize and we need to do it sincerely.
 Great deposits come in sincere words.
• A person must possess a deep sense of security. A person with
little security cannot do it. It makes them too vulnerable.
 When resolved team relationships are strengthened.
WITHDRAWALS
When my

EMOTIONAL

BANK account

Is overdrawn

then

my trust

reserve in the
Team is LOW.
RESULT OF WITHDRAWAL
• I have no flexibility. I am walking
on a mine field in the team.

• I have to be very careful what I say.

I measure every word. It is
TENSION TEAM.

• Many teams are filled with it.

• If a large reserve of trust is not

sustained by continuing deposits,
the relationship will deteriorate.
Old deposits evaporate .

• Therefore your accounts with the

people you interact with on a
regular basis require more
constant investment.
5 PARADIGMS OF HUMAN INTERACTION

Win/win is not a technique; it is total philosophy of human

interaction. It is one of the 6 paradigms of interaction.
1. Win/win
2. Win/lose/
3. lose/win
4. Lose/lose
5. No deal
