Adjective An adjective is a word that describes a noun in greater
detail. It modifies or describes a noun.

An adjective describes the kind, quantity, or amount of


something.

Examples The flowers are beautiful.


The adjective "beautiful" describes the subject "flowers" in
the sentence above.

Rosa Maria has two gardens.

The adjective "two" quantifies the noun "gardens" in the


sentence above.
Types of Adjectives
Adjectives may be classified into descriptive and limiting adjectives are the most
common types of adjectives. This kind of adjective tells something about a noun by
describing a quality or trait. A smaller group of adjectives point out and makes
definite or indefinite a number or quantity. These are called limiting adjectives.

Limiting adjectives are classified into:


1. Article: a, an, the
2. Demonstrative: this, that, these, those
3. Possessive: my, our, ours, your, yours, his, hers, its
4. Relative: what, which, who, whose
5. Numerical: one, two, three, etc. and first, second, etc.
6. Indefinite: all, both, every, each, some, any, many

Adjectives have forms to indicate the degree of comparison. The comparative form
compares two nouns or pronouns, while the superlative form compares three or more
nouns or pronouns.

Lorna adverbs to compare two things or actions.

Superlatives Comparison in a group

Greta
We use the superlative form of adjectives and adverbs
to compare one thing or action with a group of things
or actions.

Greta is the tallest in her family.


Is this the fastest you can drive?
Some of my happiest memories are from the 90s.
This is the most comfortable sofa I've ever sat on.
He's my best friend.
The hottest temperatures in Brazil are in January.

*Some two-syllable adjectives can take both forms (adding -er/-est or more/the most): narrow - clever - simple - cruel - common - likely - gentle - common.
*Adverbs ending in -ly always add more/the most.
**Old has a regular form (older/the older) and an irregular one (elder/the eldest) when describing people's ages, especially when they are family
members.
Notes

• Less/the least are the opposites of more/the most.


Planes are less dangerous than cars.
I bought the least expensive phone. I only need it to make calls.

• Before comparatives, we can use much/a lot/a bit/no/any.


Your car is much faster than mine.

• Superlatives are common in expressions with ever.


This is the biggest hamburger I've ever eaten!
