GLOBAL PROBLEMS

D. Čierny, E. Malachovská, V. Lanková, A. Kozmová, IV.A

HOMELESSNESS

serious problem in many countries all over the world, especially in big cities or small towns

women and men dressed in tattered clothes, carrying bags and begging passersby for money

most people without shelter “sleep rough”, which is sleeping outdoors regardless of the weather

they live in cardboard boxes under the bridges, in dumpsters, on benches, in parks or storage units
and are exposed to diseases, death and extreme weather during the whole day
Major causes of homelessness - illness and disability, unemployment, addiction to alcohol, drugs or
gambling, escaping violence and abuse, poverty
Solutions - local governments and charities try to help by setting up shelters and kitchens for
DRUGS

are substances that change a person's mental or physical state

Drugs can be:

⬤ legal – alcohol, caffeine, tobacco

⬤ illegal – cocaine, heroin, ecstasy

Risks of using drugs - build an addiction, risk of spreading disease through

sharing needles, overdose, drug use leads to making irresponsible decisions

Reasons for taking drugs - to fit in, to cope with problems or escape reality, by peer pressure or just for “kicks”

Treatment for drug addiction - outpatient rehab treatment - based on meetings with psychologist, its success
depends in huge measure on the patient’s motives and complete withdrawal from using drugs
AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome)
incurable disease, caused by virus HIV it attacks the body immune system

body becomes vulnerable to infections, AIDS virus lives in body fluids - blood, etc.

some drugs inhibit the progress of HIV, although they can be very expensive to get

⬤ Three major
ways to become
infected:
vertical
sexual intercourse transmission injection drug use
POLLUTION OF AIR, WATER AND SOIL

Pollution of air

growing number of cars and factories that are producing carbon dioxide, toxic gases and exhaust
fumes
the result: greenhouse effect, acid rain, destruction of ozone
layer
greenhouse effect - greenhouse gases are trapping the sun light -> Earth’s temperature is increasing -> glaciers
are melting(sea levels are rising) -> flooding of coastal areas, nature is dying, animals are confused, warmer
winters, extreme heat waves

acid rain - exhaust fumes+water in the clouds = sulphuric acid in the rain -> death of plants, infertile soil,
destruction of monuments and buildings, toxic for us when in contact with our skin
destruction of ozone layer - freons and methane (freezers, sprays and cows) are tearing the ozone
layer which is protecting us from harmful sun light which is causing skin cancer and eye problems
POLLUTION OF AIR, WATER AND SOIL

Pollution of soil

emission of gases that are being turned into an acid rain which is making the soil infertile

large amounts of pesticides and fertilisers that are being used for
killing insects
radioactive waste from factories that is being throw out into the nature and soil is absorbing its
substances

illegal dumps that are again being absorbed into the soil
POLLUTION OF AIR, WATER AND SOIL

Pollution of water

illegal rubbish dumps near water

factory liquids are being leaked out into the water

oil platforms and oil spills in the water are causing the death of fish

chemicals and plastic in the water -> animals are eating it thinking its food or are being trapped in
plastic bags or nets -> death
NATURAL DISASTERS

earthquakes - movement of a lithospheric plates -> surface shaking -> destruction of nature and life

tsunami waves - result of an earthquake in the ocean -> enormous wave flooding the coastal areas

tornadoes and hurricanes - extreme thunderstorms -> destruction and flooding of the cities

droughts -> forest fires - extremely high temp. -> extensive fires -> death of people and animals
SOLUTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS (THE 3 “R”s)
How can you recycle?
● Reduce the amount of waste you produce. ● waste that can be recycled:
● Reuse items as much as you can before replacing them.
● Recycle items wherever possible.

How can you reduce the amount of waste you produce?

● only buy what you need
● choose products with less packaging
● buy in bulk
● look for items that you can re-use

How can you reuse what you have?

● refill a water bottle with a water from home
● update your computer instead of buying a new one
● use eco-friendly bags instead of plastic ones
FOOD AND ENERGY SOURCES
● the Earth’s resources are not limitless
● we passed our sustainable limits
● warning of burning fossil fuels and of
nuclear waste
● solar energy - heating up swimming pools
● big differences between certain parts of the
world - starvation
EXTINCTION OF SPECIES
Extinction is the death of all members of a species of plants, animals, or other organisms.

Certain living conditions - temperature, water, light, soil.

Worldwide organisations (Greenpeace, WWF, Friends of Earth) are trying to protect

endangered plants and animals species.
