Jose T. Joya’s early work from 1949 to 1953 was highly figurative and conventionally representational, in line with the expectations of his Conservative mentors at UP. When he returned from Michigan in 1957, his work displayed a raw power and energy that fed off from his mentored experience with Abstract Expressionism, which was then at the height of its popularity in the US. His works from the late Fifties to the late Sixties, using a cheaper oil paint substitute called Hubock White, combined a highly kinetic application of paint on canvas, slashed on with great energy from a palette knife to form strong diagonals and rich contrasts between lines and planes. Alternatively, Joya would also use a more melodic application of thick areas of flat color, laid in with blocks resembling boulders or masonry. Often of a large or dramatic scale, Joya’s abstracts followed a process of visual and formal reduction based on an observation of nature. Landscapes, trees, rivers, rocky peaks and cities were the sources of his vision, to be rearranged and simplified into lines, planes, colors, and “visual sensations.” José T. Joya was born on June 3, 1931 in Manila. A Filipino abstract artist and a National Artist of the Philippines awardee. Joya was a printmaker, painter, mixed media artist, and a former dean of the University of the Philippines' College of Fine Arts. He pioneered abstract expressionism in the Philippines.

Ligawan By Fernando Amorsolo.
Amorsolo’s narrative is enhanced through attention to details of light and shadow, and the richness of color is in the hardy blue black texture of the lad’s working slacks contrast against the girl’s striped and fruity colored country outfit glowing in the sun, with the dried haystack providing ochre afterglow shadows. The colors are clean and distinct, giving vibrancy to all areas. Fernando Amorsolo was born on May 30, 1892, in Paco,Manila . Don Fabian de la rosa, his mother's cousin, was also a Filipino painter. At the age of 13, Amorsolo became an apprentice to De la Rosa, who would eventually become the advocate and guide to Amorsolo's painting career. During this time, Amorsolo's mother embroidered to earn money, while Amorsolo helped by selling water color postcards to a local bookstore for 10 centavos each. His brother, Pablo Amorsolo, was also a painter. Amorsolo's first success as a young painter came in 1908, when his painting Leyendo el periódico took second place at the Bazar Escolta, a contest organized by the Asociacion Internacional de Artistas.
