SUBTRACTION
What is Addition?

 Addition in math is a process of combining two or


more numbers. It is used to figure out the total of
two or more numbers. Plus“ + ” is the symbol used
for showing addition.
What is Subtraction?

 Subtraction is used to find the difference between


two numbers. Subtraction means taking away a
number from another number. Minus “ – ” is the
symbol used for showing subtraction
Why is Learning About Addition and Subtraction Important?

 Addition and subtraction are useful for many


activities of everyday life, like setting the table,
making change while shopping at the supermarket,
playing some games.

 Addition and subtraction prepare us for learning


about other math topics, including multiplication
and division, in school.
Rules of Addition
 When any number is added to 0 the value of the
given number remains the same.
 The final sum of two numbers will remain the same
irrespective of the higher denomination being first
or second.
 The process of carrying forward is when the
numbers given add up to a double digit number, the
first number is added to the next row.
Rules of Subtraction
 When any number is Subtracted from 0 the value of
the given number remains the same

 The higher value must be placed on top to get a


positive value

 If the higher number is not on top the process of


borrowing must be followed

 There are 160 books in one classroom and 340


books in the other. How many books are there
altogether in both classrooms ?
Answer : 160 + 340 = 500

 A pack of Christmas cards costs 540 rs. How much


change would there be from 1000 ?
Answer : 1000-540 = 460
