WHAT IS ANTE MORTEM INSPECTION?
 Ante-mortem inspection aims to screen out suspected
diseased or injured animals for isolation slaughter. This
prevents contamination of premises, equipment,
carcasses and personnel which would facilitate the
appropriate control, disinfection and preventive
measures taken to avoid the spread of diseases.
IMPORTANCE OF ANTE-MORTEM
 Inspectors conduct antemortem procedures at the
abattoir on the day of slaughter to identify and
condemn animals that are unfit for slaughter and to
note clinical signs or lesions of disease that may not be
apparent after slaughter
WHO MADE THE MEAT INSPECTION?
 The Meat Inspection Act was passed by the Congress of
the United States and signed into law by President
Theodore Roosevelt on June 30, 1906.
WHO IS BENEFITED FROM PROPER MEAT
INSPECTION?

 Inspection of meat by qualified individuals to eliminate


unwholesome, adulterated, or mislabeled meat or meat
products from the food supply protects consumers
from the physical, biological, and chemical hazards that
may originate in food animals, the environment, or
people.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
ANTE-MORTEM AND POST MORTEM?
 Slaughterhouses provide an opportunity for inspection
and evaluation of fitness for human consumption as it
allows checking the live animals on arrival (antemortem
inspection) as well as the carcasses and other parts such
as organs of slaughtered animals (postmortem
inspection).
AGENCY THAT COMPRISE MEAT
INSPECTION IN TH PHILIPPINES
 National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) - the sole
national controlling/competent authority attached to
the Department of Agriculture charged by the
government with the control of meat hygiene and meat
inspection.
