A collection of wild animals kept in
captivity for exhibition.
The word “menagerie” is used to
describe old fashioned zoos that were
designed mainly to display a large
number of animal species.
Or
Menagerie is place where
animals are kept and trained
especially for exhibition

WORD ORIGIN AND HISTORY
From the 19th century to the end of the 20th
century, zoos have evolved from menagerie type
collections into conservation centres.
The Menagerie 1712, from france menagerie
means ‘‘housing for domestic animals’’.

The term was first used in seventeenth century


france in reference to the management of house
hold or domestic stock.
The french-language ‘‘Methodological
Encyclopedia’’of 1782 defines a menagerie as an
‘‘establishment of luxury and curiosity’’.
The aim of the zoos
• To display as many species as possible. Their
aim is to ensure that every visitor is aware of the
importance of nature conservation.
• Children in particular that visit zoo must be
brought into contact with nature because they are
the future caretakers on this planet.
• children can develop a larger sense of respect and
understanding towards the living world

• An effective way of educating visitors is ensuring


that they have a great day out with lots of
enjoyment!

• This ensures that the visitors remember what they


have seen or learnt.
• Zoos educate their visitors by displaying animals
in good exhibits that cater for their physical and
psychological needs also habitat they live in..

• Animals are stimulated to show their natural


behavior by providing them with environmental
enrichment and through good enclosure design.
