Active
We use active sentences to give
information directly and clearly.

In active sentences, the subject

performs the action.

Subject + verb + object.

Example:

The farmer grows vegetables in the field.

subject verb object
Remember:
Active Subject + Verb + Object

The students study grammar together after school.

She buys a new dress for every celebration.

The bee stung Chris on his arm.

We painted the house all day yesterday.

Passive
We use passive sentences to show focus on the person or object that receives
an action.

In active sentences, we don’t focus on the person or object that performs the
action.

Object + verb “be” + past participle + subject.

Example:

A bridge was built over the river.

object verb past subject
“be” participle

In passive sentences, an ‘agent’ (the thing or person performing the action) is

not always necessary. We don’t know who built the bridge.
Remember:
Passive Object + Verb ‘be’ + Past Participle + Subject
Sometimes we don’t know who the ‘agent’ is.

This cake was baked by my older sister.

These novels were written many years ago.

My house is cleaned every other day.

The patients are seen by the doctor throughout

the day.
