Groundwater

modelling
Lecture 3, Week 9
Groundwater in hydrological cycle
Other common uses:
1. Extracted for drinking
2. Extracted for irrigation
3. Extracted for industrial activities
4. Extracted for other domestic activities (washing,
cooking, cleaning etc.)
Groundwater concerns
Problems
Because of all these issues…….
Groundwater Modelling is needed!

A groundwater model is a computer-

based representation of the essential
features of a natural hydrogeological
system that uses the laws of science and
mathematics. Its two key components are
conceptualization and the mathematical
code.
Why use a model?

The developed model can be

used for groundwater
monitoring, management,
planning and conservation.
Steps in groundwater modelling
1. Background

3. Groundwater contamination due to pollution

4. Study groundwater fluctuations

2. Purpose
3. Data Collection
4. Boundary conditions
5. Model type
6. Code
Code
• Visit the following websites to see some of the
common groundwater modelling codes;

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/047173862X.app3
7. Calibration and validation
Validated Model is what we want
• Validated model is used for
groundwater monitoring, forecasting
and management.

• Validated model is also used for

groundwater planning, supply analysis
and policy making.
