MOTION
Aristotelian And Galilean Conceptions
Of Vertical Motion, Horizontal Motion
And Projectile Motion
Objective
o Describe the Aristotelian concepts of vertical motion, horizontal motion, and
projectile motion;
o Describethe concept of vertical motion, horizontal motion, and projectile
motion according to Galileo; and
o Compare and contrast the Aristotelian and Galilean concepts of vertical
motion, horizontal motion, and projectile motion.
Motion
• change with time of the position or orientation
of a body
ARISTOTLE’S CONCEPT OF
VERTICAL MOTION,
HORIZONTAL MOTION AND
PROJECTILE MOTION
Aristotle (384-322 B.C)

o father of “modern philosophy”

o biology, metaphysics, logic,
politics, agriculture, medicine,
and theatre
o He was student of Plato
Vertical Motion
o referred to as natural
motion

o Natural motion the object

will move and will return
to its natural state based on
the object materials or
composition – earth, water,
 Aristotle concept of natural
air and fire. motion is largely vertical
motion which is falling and
rising.
Horizontal Motion
o An object moving is violent
motion requires push or pull
to maintain horizontal
motion.

o Violent motion is imposed

motion caused by pushing
or pulling.
Projectile Motion
o An object is parallel to the ground
until it is the object s time to fall back
into the ground.

o An impetus will be kept by the

object until such time that the initial
force is forgotten , and the object
return to its natural state to stop
moving and fall to the ground.
Galileo's Concept of Vertical
Motion, Horizontal Motion
And Projectile Motion
Galileo Galilei 1564-1642
(Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de’ Galilei)

o The“father of Modern
Science”
o Galileo Galilei was an Italian
physicist, astronomer,
mathematician and
philosopher who was one of
the founders of modern science
and played a major role in the
Scientific Revolution of the
17th Century.
Vertical Motion
o In a absence of resistance,
objects would fall not depending
on their weight, but in the time of
fall.
o Also, if the object encountered a
1kg 10 kg
resistive force from a fluid equal
or greater than its weight, it will
slow down and reaches a uniform
motion until it reaches the
bottom and stops.
Horizontal Motion
oAn object in motion, if unimpeded will continue to be in
motion and an external force is not necessary to maintain
the motion.
Projectile Motion
o Galileo performed
o the motion of an object experiments on
thrown or projected into uniformly accelerated
the air, subject to only the motion using an inclined
acceleration of gravity.
planed and used the
same apparatus to study
projectile motion.
PARABOLIC TRAJECTORY
Modified True and False. Read the
statement carefully. Write TRUE if the
statement is correct and if FALSE, change
the italicized word or group of word to
make the statement correct.
1. Aristotle claimed that violent motion
is that imposed motion.
2. In natural motion, an object will
move and will eventually return to its
natural state depending on the
composition that the object is made of.
3. According to Galileo, heavy
object will fall faster than the light
ones.
4. Aristotle said that to keep the
object moving in the horizontal
motion a constant amount of force
is needed.
5. Object drop simultaneously will

reach the ground at the same time

regardless of their masses and air
resistance.
6. Galileo concluded that the
path taken by a projectile is
parabolic.
7. Galileo used an inclined plane to
perform his experiments both on
uniformly accelerated motion and to
study projectile motion.
8. A kick ball is the example of a
natural motion .
