WHAT IS A FRESH WATER

COOLING SYSTEM?
A freshwater cooling system or Central Cooling System is
a type of cooling system used on ships to cool down the machinery
in the engine room. The freshwater is circulated in a closed circuit
to cool down the engine room machinery. The freshwater returning
from the heat exchanger after cooling the machinery is further
cooled by seawater in a sea-water cooler
PURPOSE OF FW
COOLING SYSTEM
Fresh Water Cooling System 6

PURPOSE OF FW
COOLING SYSTEM
• A freshwater cooling system in ships is a system that uses fresh
water to cool the heat-generating equipment such as the main
engine and the generator engine
• In the central cooling system, all the working machinery on
ships are cooled down using circulating fresh water.
• The system has a fresh water pressure circulation line that runs
around each floor of the ship, and a cooling fresh water pump
that pumps the fresh water through the line.
• The fresh water is cooled by heat exchange with seawater in the
central cooler.

SYSTEM COMPRISES THREE

DIFFERENT CIRCUITS:

• Sea water circuit

• Low-temperature circuit
• High-temperature circuit (H.T)
Fresh Water Cooling System 8

Sea water circuit

The seawater is used as a cooling media in

large seawater cooled heat exchangers to cool the
freshwater of the closed circuit. They are the central
coolers of the system and are normally installed in a
duplex.

Low-temperature circuit

The low-temperature circuit is used for low-

temperature zone machinery and this circuit is
directly connected to the main seawater central
cooler; hence its temperature is lower than that of
high temperature (H.T circuit). The L.T circuit
comprises all auxiliary systems.

High-temperature circuit (H.T)

The H.T circuit in the central cooling system

mainly comprises of the jacket water system of the
main engine where the temperature is quite high. The
H.T water temperature is maintained by low-
temperature fresh water and the system normally
comprises of the jacket water system of the main
engine, FW generator, DG during standby condition,
Lube oil filter for stuffing box drain tank.

OTHER COMPONENTS

Expansion tank
• The loss in the closed circuit of the central cooling freshwater
system is continuously compensated by the expansion tank
which also absorbs the increase in pressure due to thermal
expansion.

Temperature Control Valves

• The heat absorbed by the H.T circuit is transferred to L.T
circuit at the temperature control valve junction.
• The outlet temperature of the main engine cooling water is kept
constant at 85-95 by means of temperature control valves by
mixing water from the two central cooling systems i.e. LT
system into the HT system.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF FW OR

CENTRAL COOLING SYSTEM

ADVANTAGES OF CENTRAL
COOLING SYSTEM

•Low maintenance cost

•Less corrosion
•The higher speed of fluid hence better heat exchange
•Use of cheaper materials
•Constant temperature level maintained
•Less wear of engine parts
•Ideal for unmanned engine room

DISADVANTAGES OF THE
CENTRAL COOLING SYSTEM

• High installation cost

• Limitation of low temperature
Presentation title 15

OPERATION OF FRESH WATER

COOLING SYSTEM
• First, the freshwater cools the various systems of the ship and raises the temperature.
• Freshwater flows into the central cooling heat exchanger to exchange heat with seawater,
and the rest is bypassed.
• The cooled freshwater flows into the left side of the 3-way valve, and the remaining
bypassed freshwater flows directly into the upper side of the 3-way valve. On the right
sideof the 3-way valve, the cooled and uncooled fresh water is combined and returned to
the ship′s cooling system.
• Meanwhile, seawater is supplied to the central cooling heat exchanger using the main
seawater pump. The main seawater pump is rotated by a variable-speed motor driven by an
inverter.
• The inverter changes the frequency of the input power supplied to the seawater pump
motor. This can change the seawater flow rate to the central cooling heat exchanger
