LESSON OBJECTIVES:
• Describe the nature and impact of non-communicable
diseases;
• Develop a concise and informative presentation
illustrating the nature of non-communicable diseases; and
• Recognize the significance of understanding common
non-communicable diseases, including their causes, signs
and symptoms, risk factors, protective factors, and
potential complications if left untreated.
ANO BA ITO?

NON-COMMUNICABLE
DISEASE
or
(NCD)
NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE or
(NCD)
• Diseases that CANNOT be spread from one
person/thing to another.
• Diseases that are not caused by pathogens (bad germs).
• Diseases that are caused by unhealthy lifestyle,
heredity, and environmental exposures.
• Can affect any system in the body (circulatory,
nervous, and respiratory).
• Can be treated but not usually cured.
Allergy
1. Allergy occurs due to an abnormal
immunologic response following an
exposure to an allergen such as dust
mites, pollen, bee venom, pet lice,
and food.
Allergy
• Cause: Allergy occurs due to an abnormal
immunologic response following an exposure
to an allergen such as dust mites, pollen, bee
venom, pet dander, and certain foods.
• Effect: The abnormal immune response
triggers symptoms such as sneezing, itching,
watery eyes, congestion, hives.
Asthma
2. Asthma is an inflammatory
disease of the airways to the lungs.
It makes breathing difficult and can
make some physical activities
difficult or even impossible. Asthma
may be prevented through lifestyle
changes, and medications.
Asthma
• Cause: Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the
airways to the lungs.
• Effect: The inflammation narrows the airways,
making breathing difficult and causing symptoms
like wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, and
chest tightness. Lifestyle changes and medications
can help manage and prevent asthma attacks.
Cardiovascular Disease
3. Cardiovascular disease is
the disease of the heart and
blood vessels.
Cardiovascular Disease
• Cause: High-blood pressure and high cholesterol
count in the body.
• Effect: It can result in conditions such as coronary
artery disease, heart attacks, stroke, or heart
failure. Risk factors like high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and sedentary
lifestyle contribute to the development of
cardiovascular disease.
Cancer
4. Cancer is caused by abnormal cells growing without
control, they form masses called tumors. According to
National Cancer Institute, cancer is a genetic disease. It
is caused by changes to genes that control the way cells
function, especially its growth and differentiation.
Genetic changes that cause cancer can be inherited
from parents or may arise during a person’s lifetime as
a result of errors in DNA replication caused by certain
environmental exposures. Cancer-causing
environmental exposures include substances, such as
the chemicals in tobacco smoke, and radiation, such as
ultraviolet rays from the sun.
Cancer
• Cause: Cancer is caused by abnormal cells growing without
control, forming tumors. It can be caused by genetic changes
inherited from parents or acquired during a person's lifetime
due to errors in DNA replication caused by certain
environmental exposures.
• Effect: The uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells can invade
nearby tissues, spread to other parts of the body, and interfere
with normal bodily functions. Cancer can have various types
and affects different organs and systems in the body.
Diabetes
• Diabetes Mellitus is a disease that
prevents the body to convert food into
energy. Carbohydrates are normally
changed into a simple sugar called
glucose (a source of energy). Insulin, the
hormone produced in the pancreas,
regulates the level of glucose in the
blood.
Diabetes
• Cause: Diabetes is caused by genetic factors and lifestyle
choices, leading to either an autoimmune destruction of
insulin-producing cells (type 1 diabetes) or insulin
resistance and insufficient insulin production (type 2
diabetes).
• Effect: Diabetes results in high blood sugar levels, causing
complications such as damage to blood vessels, nerves,
and organs. Symptoms include excessive thirst, frequent
urination, weight loss, fatigue, and slow wound healing.
Arthritis
5. Arthritis refers to
inflammation of
joints.
Arthritis
• Cause: Arthritis refers to inflammation of
joints.
• Effect: The inflammation causes joint pain,
stiffness, swelling, and limited mobility.
There are different types of arthritis, including
osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout,
each with its own specific causes and effects.
Kidney of Renal Failure
6. Kidney or Renal Failure is a medical
condition in which the kidneys fail to
adequately filter the waste products from the
blood. It may be caused by an underlying
primary kidney disease, a complication of
untreated or uncontrolled co-morbidities
such as hypertension, and diabetes, and/or a
result of a nephrotoxic substances.
Kidney or Renal Failure
• Cause: Kidney or Renal Failure can be caused by an
underlying primary kidney disease, complications of untreated
or uncontrolled co-morbidities like hypertension and diabetes,
and exposure to nephrotoxic substances.
• Effect: When the kidneys fail to adequately filter waste
products from the blood, it can lead to a buildup of toxins and
imbalances in fluid and electrolytes. This can result in
symptoms like fatigue, fluid retention, decreased urine output,
and complications affecting various body systems. Treatment
options include dialysis or kidney transplantation.
Video Recap
Critical Thinking
• Is there anything we can do to prevent any
problems related to non-communicable
diseases?
NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASE
1. Allergy
2. Asthma
3. Cardiovascular Disease
4. Cancer
5. Diabetes
6. Arthritis
7. Kidney or Renal Failure
