JEAN PIAGET
LET THE RHYTHM MOVE YOUR
FEET
• Songs help children to become familiar with the natural rhythm of
language and provide a mnemonic strategy for remembering words and
structures. In this session, we will share simple yet fun ideas for creating
catchy songs for your students and an opportunity to reflect on the
pedagogical benefits of doing so. Get your students into the rhythm of
English!
WITH ENGLISH-LANGUAGE
MUSIC,
YOU CAN…
• Make your lessons fun and relevant. There is no motivator quite like enjoyment. Even
students who are struggling to learn English will go above and beyond to learn phrases
that are important to them. By teaching a song that your students like, you can ensure
they will relate to the lesson and have a desire to learn the words.

• Give your students the opportunity to hear native speakers. Songs are
a natural listening activity that students don’t even realize they are participating in! By
listening to a song sung by a native English speaker, students will begin to develop an
ear for how natives speak. They will begin to recognize different English accents and
learn how to pick out phrases that are difficult to understand. They will also develop
great conversational skills by stepping out of the textbook and into the real world of
how people communicate in English.
WITH ENGLISH-LANGUAGE MUSIC,
YOU CAN…
• Teach new words and grammar. By picking a song that is slightly more advanced than
your students’ current abilities, you will be able to introduce them to many new words and
phrases. You will even be able to show them how grammatical structures are used, such as
verbs and prepositions. It’s one thing to hear your teacher tell you about a past tense verb,
but something else entirely to hear Taylor Swift using it in a popular song. This brings real
world value to each lesson.

• Help your students practice pronunciation. The great thing about music is that you can
sing along! This allows students to practice pronouncing words by imitating the singer to
sound like a native speaker. This eliminates any guesswork as to how the words should
sound. A good song can be enjoyed again and again, which means that students can continue
to sing along outside of class for continual learning. Since many popular songs are quite
catchy, it might even get stuck in their head, leaving them no choice but to learn the words.

PLAY MATTERS
• Play in the classroom is crucial for children to explore the world
and learn naturally.
• Through games, we learn the value of life and relationships while
developing language skills and effective communication.
• This academic session will help teachers include playful activities
on a regular basis to keep students motivated and engaged in
class.

GAMIFICATION

• Gamification in learning involves using game-based

elements such as point scoring, peer competition, team
work, score tables to drive engagement, help students
assimilate new information and test their knowledge. It
can apply to school-based subjects, but is also used
widely in self-teaching apps and courses, showing that
the effects of gamification do not stop when we are
adults.
GAMIFICATION
• Games play into basic needs (autonomy, value, competence etc.)
• Games can be social (games may have leaderboards, for example, or places where high-
scorers are displayed so players can feel validated when they do well. Players may be able
to challenge their friends or invite others to play)
• Games encourage ongoing engagement (gamification helps retain users by encouraging
them to keep playing and gain more points, rewards, or simply discover more information)
• It gives players (learners) control (they feel like they are in charge of their own learning
journey, going from point A to point B).
• Gamification works because it triggers real, powerful human emotions such as happiness,
intrigue, excitement and accomplishment. All around the world, companies, institutions
and household brands are using gamification, with marvellous results.
BENEFITS OF GAMIFICATION IN THE
CLASSROOM
• Students feel like they have ownership over their learning
• A more relaxed atmosphere in regards to failure, since learners can simply try again
• More fun in the classroom
• Learning becomes visible through progress indicators
• Students may uncover an intrinsic motivation for learning
• Students can explore different identities through different avatars or characters
• Students often are more comfortable in gaming environments, so are more proactive and
open to making mistakes
• Higher engagement and concentration levels amongst students
• The opportunity to think outside of the box. Tasks are no longer just about filling in a
worksheet – what are the wider, ‘gamified’ consequences?

THE SKY IS NOT THE LIMIT
• When planning a lesson, the inclusion of a wide variety of resources is necessary to address
multiple intelligences, learning styles, and needs and preferences within the class. This
academic session will provide teachers with helpful tips to help them deliver student-
centered lessons.
