EC304.55to56 1
OBJECTIVES

On completion of this period, you would be able to

know

• Use of shift register as memory.

• Various types of memories.

EC304.55to56 2
Recap

1. What is a register?

Group of flip-flops used to store the data.

2. What is a shift register?

A sequential circuit which can store information and

transfer or shift upon a command.

EC304.55to56 3
Recap (contd.)

3. What are the applications of shift registers?

• Timing circuits

• Sequence generators

• Serial to parallel converters.

• Parallel to serial converters

•Shift register memories

EC304.55to56 4
Memory

A device that stores information in electrical,

magnetic or optical form.
According to the method of access, memories are of two
types.

- Sequential access memory.

- Direct access memory.

EC304.55to56 5
SEQUENTIAL ACCESS MEMORY

This memory accessed in a sequential or serial

fashion.

• Access time is different for different locations.

SHIFT REGISTER AS MEMORY
• Each register holds one of the N bits of each of the K word.

• With each clock pulse the bits in each register will

advance one step , and stored words will appear
sequentiallyQ0, Q1---- Qn-1.

• If the write-enable line is set at logic’1’ , write operation

takes place.

The first word written into the memory will be the first
word that will appear when the content of the memory
recalled.
