EC304 .63 1
OBJECTIVES

On the completion of this period,

you would be able to know
 Difference between Flash ROM and NV RAM

 Difference between SDRAM and EDORAM

 Specifications of DIMM used in computer system

EC304 .63 2
Recap
• What is static RAM?
– Static RAM stores data as long as power is present
• What is Dynamic RAM?
– Dynamic RAM stores data for very short period of
time.
• What is the disadvantage of Static RAM?
– Static RAM occupies more space in IC fabrication and
its packaging density is low
• What is the disadvantage of Dynamic RAM?
– It needs periodical refreshment of its content.

EC304 .63 3
NV RAM

Non volatile Random access Memory

 Mostly used in computer system

 Most well known example would be

ferromagnetic memory

 Used in Routers to provide storage for the

start up configuration file

EC304 .63 4
FLASH ROM
It is a closet type of NVRAM

 Used in portable MP3 players

 It is electrically erasable programmable Read only

Memory (EEPROM) chip used in computers and
other devices

 Unlike an EPROM, it can be programmed and

erased multiple times electrically.

EC304 .63 5
 It a is form of recordable memory chip

 FLASH ROM is more expensive than RAM.

 FLASH ROM can be written or erased about

1,00,000 times before it becomes corrupt.

EC304 .63 6
EDORAM

Extended Data Output Random Access Memory

 It is similar to fast page mode DRAM.

 A new access can be started while keeping the

data output of the previous cycle.

 Allowing some what improved speed.

 EDORAM was synchronous in nature.

 Transfer rate is dependent on its access time.

EC304 .63 7
SDRAM

Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory

 It is improved type of DRAM

 SDRAM has synchronous interface

 Waits for a clock pulse before responding to its

control inputs.
EC304 .63 8
 The limitations of EDORAM was replaced by
SDRAM.

 Increase in clock speeds also increased SDRAM’s

data transfer rate.

 It transfers the data synchronously with clock.

EC304 .63 9
DIMM
Dual In Line Memory Module

 SDRAM is made in 64 bit wide module called DIMM

 They have a 168 pin edge connector.

 They are available in 8, 16, 32,64, 128, 256 and 512

MB with 6, 8, 10 and 12 ns speed.
EC304 .63 10
 Usually 2- 4 DIMM sockets present on a mother
board
 Most chip sets are made for SDRAM

 Some Mother Boards had both SIMM and DIMM

sockets.

 Reuse old EDORAM in the SIMM sockets or

choose to install SDRAM in the DIMM sockets.
