Where is Kosovo?

Kosovo is situated among many countries, right next to Serbia, Albania

and Macedonia on the Southeast of Europe.
However, Kosovo used to be a disputed area.
In the 12th century, Kosovo was considered the heart of the Serbian Empire
(Orthodox).
200 years later, the Ottoman Empire (Turks) won the Epic Battle of Kosovo and
gained control of the area. Islam became popular within the region and Albanian
population increased
 1900s, -Serbs regainedcontrol of Kosovo,
after WWI, Kosovo became part of Yugoslavia (a Socialist
Republic made up of different countries) and
it was granted AUTONOMY - they were allowed to have an
independent de facto government.
But
in 1990 Slobodan Milosevic, the Yugoslavian president,
Albanians in Kosovo did not feel Serb…

1991

There were peaceful protests

and later some attacks on Serbian police

Kosovo Albanians wanted Independence.

Kosovo Liberation Army – a military group of rebels-
was formed.

Both Serbian -and Yugolslav armies- and
KLA committed atrocities, which left a
huge number of refugees
