Name : C.V.S.B.UMA VANI

Designation : Lecturer
Branch : ECE
Institute : GPW, Palamaner.
Year/semester : III semester
Subject : Digital Electronics
Subject code : CM-305
Topic : Semiconductor Memories (8/10)
Duration : 50Mts
Sub Topic : PROM & EPROM’s
Teaching Aids : ppt
CM305.73 1
Objectives

On completion of this period, you would be able

to

• State the use of PROM.

• Distinguish between UVEPROM and EEPROM.

CM305.73 2
Recap

• In the last class we have studied about

• The advantages & disadvantages of dynamic RAM over

static RAM.

• Need for RAM.

CM305.73 3
Do You Know ?

• What are the advantages and disadvantages of

dynamic RAM over static RAM ?

• What is the need for RAM?

CM305.73 4
Programmable Read Only Memory (PROM)

• The ROM which allows the user to store the data by the
process of programming is PROM.

• PROM’s come from the manufacturer as unprogrammed.

• These are programmed to meet the user needs.

• Once a PROM is programmed , it cannot be changed.

CM305.73 5
Need for PROM

• PROM allows the user to program the unit in his own

laboratory.

• PROM programmers are available to facilitate the

procedure of programming to store.

• PROM is more economical , to store small quantity of

data.

CM305.73 6
Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory
(EPROM)

• An EPROM can be reprogrammed by first erasing the

existing program.

• There are two types of EPROM’s.

(1) Ultra Violet Erasable PROM (UVEPROM).

(2) Electrically Erasable PROM (EEPROM).

CM305.73 7
UVEPROM: The Ultra Violet light is sent
through the window to erase all the data
stored in ROM.

EEPROM : The EEPROM can be erased and

reprogrammed using electrical pulses.

CM305.73 8
Comparision between EEPROM and UVEPROM

EEPROM UVEPROM

erased and • These devices can be
programmed with erased and programmed
electrical signals. with Ultra Violet light.

more. less.

• Easy to construct and • Difficult to construct and

economical. expensive.

• In EEPROM the location-

by-location erasable is • In UVEPROM all memory
possible. locations are
simultaneously erasable.

CM305.73 10
Summary

We have discussed about

• The use of PROM

• The comparision between UVEPROM and EEPROM
