INTRODUCTION

 High performance concrete is a concrete mixture, which possess high durability and high
strength when compared to conventional concrete.
 According to American Concrete Institute (ACI):
High Performance Concrete is defined as, “a concrete that meets special combinations of
performance and uniformity requirements that cannot always be achieved routinely using
conventional constituents and normal mixing, placing, and curing practices”.
High Performance Concrete (HPC) is now widely used worldwide because of its
-
 High workability
 High strength.
 High density
 High modulus of elasticity
 High dimensional stability with good abrasion and impact resistance
WHAT IS HIGH PERFORMANCE
CONCRETE?
 The American Concrete Committee on High Performance Concrete includes the
following six criteria:
 Ease of placement
 Long term mechanical properties
 Early-age strength
 Toughness
 Life in severe environments
 High Performance Concrete (HPC) is a specialized series of concretes
designed to provide several benefits in the construction of concrete
structures.
CHARACTERISTICS OF HIGH
PERFORMANCE CONCRETE
Very low porosity through a tight and refined pore structure of the
cement paste.

It has Very low permeability of the concrete

High resistance to chemical attack

Low heat of hydration

High early strength and continued strength development

High workability and control of slump

Low water binder ratio

INGREDIENTS USED IN HIGH
PERFORMANCE CONCRETE

Fine Coarse
Aggregate Aggregate

CEMENT HPC Water

Mineral Chemical
Admixture Admixture
WHEN TO USE HIGH PERFORMANCE
CONCRETE

Severe exposure conditions

Increase durability

Prevent deterioration of concrete

APPLICATIONS OF HIGH
PERFORMANCE CONCRETE

High rise
Bridges Tunnels
buildings

Nuclear
Pavements Metro
structures
ADVANTAGES OF HPC

Improved durability

High tensile strength

Reduced maintenance cost

Low creep and shrinkage

Workability and Pumpability

Speed of construction

Higher seismic resistance

LIMITATIONS OF HPC

 An extended quality control is required

 High Performance Concrete has to be manufactured and placed much
more carefully than normal concrete
 Cost is generally high due to used of various admixtures and high quality
materials
 Some special constituents are required which may not be available in the
ready mix concrete plants
CONCLUSION

HPC can be produced by part replacement of

cement with silica fume and fly ash and not by
increasing the quantity of cement.

Sustainable development by reducing carbon dioxide

emission

HPC initial cost is high but requires less labour, hence decreasing the
labour cost

Longer life of structure because being highly strengthened, durable and

corrosive resistant
