AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY

DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

A PRESENTATION ON STUDENT INDUSTRIAL WORK

EXPERIENCE SCHEME (SIWES) TRAINING UNDERTAKEN
AT NNPC/SPDC/TOTAL ENERGIES/AGIP JV CHAIR IN
MECHANICAL ENGINEERING ABU, ZARIA.

PRESENTED BY:

AKHAIYEMEN PETER ODION

(U17ME1092)
INTRODUCTION
During my SIWES at NNPC/SHELL PROFESSORIAL CHAIR, I
worked in the following laboratories and workshop:
1. Strength of material laboratory
2. Multiple functional material laboratory
3. Welding and Fabrication workshop
4. Machine workshop
EXPERIENCE GAINED DURING SIWES

The experiences that i have gained during my SIWES

program is as follows:
• How to cut and file metal using the angle grinder
machine
• How to conduct different tests using the Universal
Material Testing Machine (UTME)
• How to weld metal materials/pieces together using
the shielded arc welding machine.
• A brief knowledge about gas welding
• How to measure using a Vernier caliper.
• Metal cutting using a Hacksaw
CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED

i. Power Supply Shortages: On certain occasions, I found myself in the laboratory

without the ability to operate any machines due to power supply shortages.

ii. Limited Equipment/Tools: The unavailability of operational machines in the

laboratory hindered my ability to perform certain tasks.

ii. Lack of safety equipment: I had to execute a welded joint using an arc welding
machine without proper eye protection, resulting in eye discomfort and a
subsequent absence from training for three days.
CONCLUSIONS
My six-month industrial attachment with the NNPL/SPDC/TOTAL ENERGIES/AGIP JV CHAIR
Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, Ahmadu Bello
University, Zaria, has proven to be an incredibly interesting, productive, and instructive
experience in my life. This training has provided me with new insights and a more
comprehensive understanding of real-world industrial working conditions and practices.

Having undergone this experience, I am confident that the industrial training program has
successfully achieved its primary objective. The exposure to practical, hands-on work, coupled
with the broader aspects of the training, has contributed to my personal and professional
development, giving me a well-rounded perspective on the field of mechanical engineering.
