TRAVELOGUES,

FOOD ARTICLES,
BLOGS AND OTHER
FORMS
Many people online post
about their experiences
when travelling, the food
they have eaten or
cooked themselves, or
sometimes, even just an
entry about their daily
lives.

2
How do we write
these forms of
creative
nonfiction?
What elements
and techniques
do they use?

3
This lesson serves as an enrichment lesson for the
following DepEd competencies:

● Explain the relationship of elements and

ideas found in the various forms and types
of creative nonfictional texts through a
close reading.

● Compare and contrast the different forms

and types of creative nonfictional texts.

4
● Examine the elements and characteristics
of travelogues, food articles, and blogs by
analyzing selected sample texts.

● Compare and contrast travelogues, food

articles, and blogs with other forms of
creative nonfiction writing.

5
MY FAVORITE FOOD

1. Think of your favorite food.

2. Use the guide questions to gather your
thoughts on your chosen food.
3. Write a five- to eight-sentence paragraph
talking about your favorite food.

6
1. WHAT IS IT THAT YOU ENJOY THE MOST
ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?

77
2. WHERE OR HOW ARE YOU USUALLY ABLE
TO EAT YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?

88
3. HOW ELSE WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR
FAVORITE FOOD?

99
How can creative nonfiction help us share our
thoughts and experiences with other people?

10
TRAVELOGUE
● a person’s account of his or
her journey to a certain
place
● can be a written report with
factual details or like a
narrative filled with your
personal experiences
● may even be supported with
pictures

11
TRAVELOGUE

● Prepare for it while you are still in the place you visited.
● Keep a diary of your impressions and experiences.
● Talk about your impressions and record them on a
device.
● Collect various brochures, tourism maps, and guides
where and when you can.

12
TRAVELOGUE

● Take some time to review your notes or recordings and

formulate an outline for your travelogue.
● The outline can help you form the narrative of your
travelogue so you can arrange it logically.
● Add a mix of vivid descriptions, factual historical and
cultural information, and some personal input.

13
TRAVELOGUE

● Keep the standard structure of an essay for your

travelogue.
● Use the beginning to provide some background
information about the place you visited.
● Put the main bulk of your travelogue in the body.
● End with a summary of your trip and main takeaways.

14
To help you decide on what your travelogue
should focus on, decide on a main topic, or an
aspect of the place you will be focusing on.

Choosing a main idea or two will also keep your

readers interested in your text as it will help you
avoid simply listing general facts and details
about the place.

15
SAMPLE TEXT

Read the sample travelogue

and take note of how the text
does more than just list down
facts and details about the
place.

16
What should you avoid when writing a
travelogue?

17
17
FOOD ARTICLE

● A food article should be able

to talk about the experience
of eating the food.
● How do we go from just
describing the food itself to
describing the experience?

18
FOOD ARTICLE

● Use all of the five senses together.

● It is easy to remember to talk about the food’s taste.
● Use the other senses as well to create a much more
vivid picture for your readers.

19
FOOD ARTICLE

● Proustian effect is a vivid description of the

combination of the taste and smell of the food that can
create a feeling of nostalgia in your readers.
● If you are able to describe the food using the other
senses as well, your food article can be improved even
more.

20
FOOD ARTICLE

● Limit your use of adjectives.

● You might use a string of them to describe different
aspects of your food in your early drafts.
● As you continue to rewrite and edit, think of other ways
that you can describe your food.
● Avoid using adjectives one after the other.
● Stick to what you feel is the most important description
of the food.

21
FOOD ARTICLE

● If you are using adjectives, be specific.

● Avoid words like delicious and tasty because they do not
really give your readers an accurate idea of what to
expect.
● Use more specific words like salty or creamy to give
readers a more concrete image of the food.

22
SAMPLE TEXT

Read the sample food article

and pay attention to how the
author describes each kind of
food.

23
Food articles do not have to be written just as a
food article. You can combine other kinds of
creative nonfiction as well. Your food article can
also be a review of a restaurant, an introduction
to a recipe, or even be part of a travelogue! Get
creative with your combinations.

24
BLOG

● an online journal published

independently on a website
● a collection of your posts
that can range from personal
entries to posts talking
about a specific topic that
you are passionate about

25
BLOG

● A blog post is not a formal composition.

● Feel free to be as casual and personal as you want.
● You may attract more readers when you appear
personable and friendly in your posts.

26
BLOG

● A blog can have a number of different purposes.

● You can keep one just as your personal journal.
● You can interact with or help out readers who have the
same interests.
● It can also be tied to a business for attracting new
customers, promoting your products, and assisting
customers.

27
BLOG

● When picking a topic, choose one that both you and

your potential readers are passionate about.
● Find one that you know a lot of people would like to
read more about.
● You will immediately be able to reach out and relate to
a large number of people.
● Your blog can have a broad topic but make sure that
each post within it is focused and specific.
28
BLOG

● Choose an angle next.

● Make sure that your approach is specific and focused
so that you do not tire yourself or your readers out by
writing about too many things at the same time.
● Since a blog is an informal composition, feel free to
consider other formats as well.

29
BLOG

● You should have your thoughts organized.

● Even though a blog is normally informal and casual,
that does not mean you should just write as your
thoughts come to you.
● Consider planning your post with an outline first.
● It will help you organize your thoughts and ideas while
still keeping your sentence structures and vocabulary
light and casual.
30
BLOG

● Make sure that you start and finish strong.

● It is difficult to keep the attention of someone who is
just surfing on the internet.
● Have a captivating hook right at the start.
● Compel them to read more from the very start and you
will be attracting more readers for your blog.
● The end of your blog should be just as powerful.

31
SAMPLE TEXT

Read the sample blog post and

take note of the author’s
conversational style of writing
about a topic that is quite
familiar to everyone these
days.

32
BLOG

● Blogs and posts like these are a great way to interact

with other people who share the same interests and
concerns as you in an organized but approachable way.
● Even if you do not want to engage with others online,
blogging can be a great pastime as well.
