F Test

Dr.S.Ilankumaran
AP/IT, TCE
Introduction to F-Test
• Greatest Statistician M.R. Fisher
• Objective of F-Test
• To find out weather the two independent estimates of papulation variance
differ significantly
• To find weather the two samples may be regarded as drawn from the normal
papulations having the same variance.
• To calculate the test of significance we have to calculate the ratio of F
• F=s12/s22
• S12>s22
• Variance is square of the standard deviation.
• S2 = £(x-x)2/n-1
F-Test
Larger Estimate of Variance

•F= Smaller Estimate of Variance.

• Degree of Freedom (V)
• V1 –(Numerator) = n1-1 (Larger Variance)
• V2 – (Denominator) = n2-1 (Smaller Variance)
• The calculated value will be compared with tabulated value for v1 and v2 at 1% or 5%
level if significance.
• If Calculated F value < tabulated F value Hypothesis is accepted No significant variance
between 2 variance.
• If Calculated F value > tabulated F value Hypothesis is not accepted Significant variance
between 2 variance.
• F-test is based on the ratio of 2 varaince, its also called as
Example
• A { 16,17, 25,26, 32, 34, 38, 40, 42}
• B { 14, 16, 24, 28, 32, 35, 37, 42, 43, 45, 47}
• 5% level of Significance
• F=s12/s22
• S12>s22
• S2 = £(x-x)2/n-1
Calculation table
A (x-xA) (x-xA)2 B (x-xB) (x-xB)2
16 -14 196 14 14-33=19 361
17 -13 169 16 16-33=17 289
25 -5 25 24
… …. … …
270/9=30 734 363/11=33 1228

S2= 734/9-1 = 91.75

S1 = 1228 / 11- 1 =122.8
F = s1/s2 = 122.8/91.75 == 1.4147 (Calculated value)
V2= 8
V1=10
Table value F (0.05)=3.35
Problem
X 56 45 32 65 12 28 84 79 93 58 12
Y 34 46 22 67 45 39 93 86 19

Level of Significance is = 0.05
