Definitions For Typhoons
• The word “typhoon”comes from the
mandarin term ‘tai feng”, which means
supreme winds.
• It is the same thing as a hurricane in the
United States or a cyclone in the United
Kingdom- a powerful storm that brings
fierce winds and intense rain.
Philippines
• Sometimes 6 to 9
typhoons make
landfall in a typical
year in the Philippines.
• A typhoon mostly hits
at the Philippines and
China Sea.
• In the Philippines
typhoons are typical
weather.
When, And Where Typhoons
Happen
• Where Typhoons
happen is at the north
western Pacific ocean.
• Most of the storms
form between May
and December but,
there is a minimum
between January and
April.

• Cyclone~ a violent storm sometimes called
a Typhoon depending on the location.
• Eye~ the calm part in the center of a
Typhoon that is shaped like a circle and that
looks like an eye.

• A weather station in Taiwan goes nuts like
it’s the end of the world when a typhoon is
coming.
• A typhoon to Taiwanese kids is like a huge
blizzard to children in North America.
• Typhoons began to be given names by the
U.S. weather service in 1953.
