Cahayon, James A.
PROBLEM STATEMENTS
This study aims to determine the challenges in developing problem-solving

and critical thinking skills of selected grade 10 students of Lutucan Integrated

National High School (LINHS), academic year 2023 – 2024.

Specifically, it aimed to answer the following questions:

1. What are the challenges of the respondents in developing their problem-solving

skills in terms of the following components:

1.1 declarative knowledge

1.3 mental computation and

1.4 comprehension

2. What are the challenges of the respondents in developing their Critical

thinking skills in terms of the following components:

2.1 interpretation

PROBLEM STATEMENTS
4. Based on the result of the study, what program can be proposed by the

researcher to address the challenges of the respondents in developing their

problem-solving and critical thinking skills?

RESEARCH
DESIGN Descriptive-
survey
This research will use a descriptive survey method which

utilized the quantitative approach of research. Also, this study will

use a self-made survey questionnaire as the tool for gathering data.

According to Bhat (2023) descriptive survey research method, respondents

answer through surveys questionnaires or polls . They are a popular market

research tool to collect feedback from respondents.

RESEARCH LOCALE
This study will be conducted at the Lutucan Integrated National High School

(LINHS). It is located at Lutucan Malabag, Sariaya, Quezon. The selection of

LINHS as the research area was based on the researcher’s observations and

interactions with the mathematics teachers, who revealed that the mentioned

challenges are encountered by the students and emphasize the difficulties in

developing problem-solving and critical thinking skills.

POPULATION
The grade 10 students who were presently enrolled in the school

served as the respondents of the study. There is 1067 total of grade 10

students in LINHS. A total of 285 LINHS students from grade 10 made up

the entire sample participants of the study. To select sample participants

Krejcie and Morgan Table is applied in this study.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
The researchers will formulate a self-made questionnaire. The

questionnaire is in a checklist form and used the four-point Likert scale

to collect the needed data for the study. The respondents were guided by

the rating scale value of “4” Strongly Agree “3” Agree, “2” Strongly

Disagree, and “1” Disagree.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA
The researchers will use the following statistical treatment to properly
analyse the data.
In the statement of problem no. 1, the researcher will utilized Weighted
Arithmetic Mean (WAM) to determine the challenges in developing problem-
solving skills in selected Grade 10 students. The formula is shown as follow:
WAM=
Where:
WAM = Weighted Arithmetic Mean
= weight of observation for each scale
= scale value for each part

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA
In the statement of problem no. 2, the researcher will utilized
Weighted Arithmetic Mean (WAM) to determine the challenges in
developing critical thinking skills in selected Grade 10 students. The
formula is shown as follow:

WAM = Weighted Arithmetic Mean
= weight of observation for each scale
= scale value for each part

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA
• In the statement of problem no. 3, the researcher will utilize an Independent T-test to

determine if there’s a significant difference between problem-solving and critical thinking skills in

selected Grade 10 students. The formula is shown as follows:

• t=
