HENRY FORD (entrepreneur)

• Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863.

• He was born on a farm in greenfield township,
Dearborn, michigan, USA.
• Ford was into auto-mobile manufacturing.
• He founded Henry Ford company on November 30,
1901.
• Henry Ford married Clara Jane Bryant on April 11,
1888, and gave birth to a son.
Ford’s Early Life
• In 1875, when Ford was 12 years old;
 He witnessed the operation of a Nichols and Shepard
road engine “…the first vehicle other than horse-
drawn that I had ever seen” he said.
• At 15 years, Ford was able to dismantle and
reassemble the timepieces of friends and neighbours
dozens of times, gaining the reputation of a watch
repairman.
Ford’s Early Life (cont’d)

• After Ford’s mother died in 1876, Ford was not

willing to take over the family farm even when his
father expected him to.
• Then in 1879, Ford left home to work as an
apprentice mechanist in Detroit, first with James F.
Flower & Bros and later with the Detroit Dry Dock
Co.
Ford’s Early Life (cont’d)

• In 1882, he returned to Dearborn to work on the

family farm, where he became adept at operating the
westing house portable steam engine.
• Ford was later hired by westing house to service their
steam engines.
• During this period, Ford also studied bookkeeping at
Goldsmith, Bryant & Stratton business college in
Detroit.
FORD’S STEAM WAGON
• In his workshop, Ford built a “steam wagon (or
tractor)” and a steam car.
• The products were not suitable for human as stated by
Ford;
1. He realised that steam was not suitable for light
vehicles.
2. Also, the boiler (used in the construction) was
dangerous.

FORD’S FIRST MOTOR
CAR
• After the construction of the steam engine, Ford had the
opportunity to repair an otto engine in 1885, then he built the
model of a four-cycle engine in 1887.
• Ford started work on a two cylinder engine in 1890.
• In 1891, Ford became an engineer with the Edison
illuminating company of Detroit.
• In 1892,Ford completed his first motor car, powered by a two
cylinder four horsepower motor with a two-and-half inch bore
and a six inch stroke which was connected to a countershaft by
a belt, and then to the rear wheel by a chain.
FORD’S FIRST MOTOR
CAR
• After his promotion to chief engineer at Edison
illuminating company in 1893,Ford had enough time and
money to devote attention to his personal experiments on
gasoline engines.
• These experiments culminated in 1896, with a completion
of a self-propelled vehicle which he named ford
quadricycle.
• Also in 1896,ford was introduced to Thomas Edison in a
meeting.
• Edison approved Ford’s automobile experimentation.
Encouraged by Edison, Ford designed and built a second
vehicle, completing it in 1898.
Ford’s first company
• In 1899, Ford resigned and founded the Detroit Automobile
company.
• The company was not successful and was dissolved in January
1901.
• With the help of C. Harold Wills, Ford designed, built, and
successfully raced a 26-horsepower automobile on October
1901.
• With this, Murphy and other stakeholders in the Detroit
Automobile company formed the Henry Ford company.
• Ford later left the company and Murphy renamed the company
as “cadiliac automobile company”.
THE BIRTH OF MODEL
T CAR
• After Ford formed a partnership with Alexander Y. Malcomson to
manufacture automobiles, “ford & malcomson ltd” was
established.
• Ford and Malcomson ltd was reincorporated as the Ford Motor
company on June 16,1903 with $28,000 capital.
• Ford then demonstrated a newly designed car on the ice of lake
st.clair, driving 1mile (1.6 km) in 39.4 seconds and setting a new
land speed record at 91.3 miles per hour.
• The car was driven around the country by a race driver, Barney
old Fried, which made the Ford brand known throughout the US.
• In 1908, Ford’s model T car was introduced by HENRY FORD.
With the steering wheel at the left.
FORD’S MODEL T CAR
• The car was easy to drive
and cheap to repair.
• Ford created a huge
publicity about his new
product in Detroit.
• The sales of the product
passed 250,000 in 1914.
• By 1918, half of all the cars
in the U.S were model T.
• The design was frequently promoted and defined by
Ford and production continued as late as 1927.
• Henry Ford turned the presidency of Ford motor
company to his son, Edsel Ford on December 1918.
• Henry Ford’s net worth was about $1.1 billion.
