The Climatic regions of the Biosphere

What is Bioisphere?
Biosphere is whole of the Earth’s surface, the sea and the air that is inhabited by the living organisms.

What are the 3 climatic regions of the Biosphere?

 The Polar region
 The Tropical region
 The Temperate region
Group Activity 1
Identify the zones in which these regions are found.

 Polar region –

 Tropical region –

 Temperate region -
Group activity 2

 Name any one or two countries found in these regions.

Polar region –

Tropical region –

Temperate region -
Climate for these regions
Polar region
• Lack of warm summers
• Has an average temperature of less than 10 degreees celcius
• Has two seasons- summer and winter
• Winter days are extremely short and summer days are extremely long
• Can get very,, very cold as -50 degrees celcius in the Arctic, in the Atlantica
as – 89 degrees
• Dry with less than 25 cm of precipitation annually. Most precipitation occurs
around summer.
Temperate region
• Moderate of mean temperatures with average monthly temperatures above 10
degrees Celsius in their warmest months and above -3 degrees in the coldest
months
• Have 4 seasons ( summer, winter autumn and spring)
• Average annual rainfall//precipitation, about 81cm ( 32 inch)/varies from
300mm to 200mm, on the average 800mm
Tropical region ( tropical rainforest)
• Constantly warm and most
• Very heavy rainfall about 200 to 450cm ( 80 – 180 inches per year)
• High temperatures; yearly avregae temperature is between 21 degrees celcius
to 30 degrees celcius
• Has wet and dry seasons
Group activity 3

Adaptations
The environment in which the organisms live are different and so they have to
adapt to survive there.
Adaptation is any feature that enables an organism to survive better in its
environment.
There are three types of adaptations;
1. Morphological - describes the body shape and structure. E.g. the webbed
feet of a duck to enable it to swim better
2. Physiological – the functioning of the organs. E.g. a dogs excellent sense of
smell enables it to follow and truck down its prey better.
3. Behavioural – the way that an organism behaves, E.g. a big likes to root in the
soil and can find food which other animlas can not find.
 Exercise.
1.a) Give an examples of each of the three types of adaptations.
b) From you’re your answer in (a), state whether the organisms lives in an
aquatic ecosystem and a terrestrial ecosystem.
2. In which climatic region would find the following PNG, France and Sweden?

 Homework.
Use your hand out to identify the terrestrial and aquatic biomes
