Synthesizing Essential
Information
learning Objectives
• Define the concept of synthesizing
• Differentiate synthesizing from
summarizing
• Determine the steps and techniques in
synthesizing information
• Synthesize essential information in a given text
from various sources
let’s take a look at these paragraphs
A. In one of Aesop’s fables, a ferocious lion spares a
timid, little mouse who had disturbed his sleep. He
had planned to eat it but it changed his mind when a
moused begged to spare his life. In a twist of fate, the
mouse later saves the lion who has caught in a
hunter’s trap.
B. I used to think that the poor and the weak are powerless
and great deeds are only for strong and powerful. My
thinking changed when I read the story of “The Lion and
the Mouse”. Now, I realized that is nowhere near the truth.
After reading the story, I realized that whether we are
weak or strong, small or big, rich or poor, we all have the
power to make a difference in the lives of others.
• Which paragraph retells the most important
details of the story?
• Which paragraph includes a new and deeper
understanding of the story?
What is synthesizing?
• Pulling together different ideas to come up with
a new bigger one.
• Is the composition or combination of parts or
elements so as to form a whole.
• Involves looking for similarities and differences
between your sources.
McCombes (2020)
Synthesis is beyond summarizing ideas from
various sources. After summarizing the text,
one must analyze and combine his/her
generalization and conclusion to the analysis
made.
Remember...

Synthesizing is different with Summarizing

but summarizing leads to Synthesizing
Formula of Synthesizing

Idea 1 + Idea 2 + own ideas = New ideas

1) A growing number of schools across the country have
started requiring wearing the school uniforms, but there
are differing opinions about them. 2) Author 1 claims that
uniforms eliminate bullying, increase student’s attendance
as well as academic achievement. Moreover, It also instills
pride in one school. 4) In contrast, Author two believes
that the mandatory wearing of uniform violates freedom of
self expression, and does not
correlate to student achievement. 5) If wearing a school
uniform be required, they need to be evaluated if the
policy is effective. 6) While school uniform symbolizes
the school’s commitment to bring about changes, it is not
the only sure-fire solution to problems in the campus.
• Sentence 1 indicates a clear topic in the opening

expressing a claim, an agreement or disagreement.
• The paragraph ends with a new thought about the

• Summarize-to shorten a long text by writing the main points.
• Paraphrase- to put passage from source material into your own
words.
• Analyze- to break complex topic into smaller parts.
• Infer- to use information or background to reach a logical
conclusion.

• R- Read two different sources about the topic
• E- Edit notes and put together similar concepts
• S- Synthesize by combining notes with what you

information, the following steps could also be great of
