ADJECTIVE CLAUSES
It’s a group of words that function as an adjective.

They describe the nouns on a sentence.

It’ll answer the questions What kind? How many? Which one?

Adjective clauses are dependant clauses. It can’t stand alone in a

sentence

TO FORM ADJECTIVE CLAUSES YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW
ONE OF TWO PATTERNS:

1. RELATIVE PRONOUN/RELATIVE ADVERB + SUBJECT +

VERB

2. RELATIVE PRONOUN/RELATIVE ADVERB AS THE

SUBJECT + VERB

YOU ALWAYS NEED A SUBJECT AND A VERB IN THE

ADJECTIVE CLAUSE
I Have a friend whose son lives in Germany

The teacher who has worked here for 15 years is retiring

The cookies that mom made us are in the kitchen

The reason why Sandra went to law school is that she didn’t want to

Essential vs Non-Essential Adjective clauses
• Sometimes the information of the adjective clause is very
important for the idea:

The man who died yesterday was his father.

There is the mountain that we are going to climb.

All the students who are going to the school trip are 16 years old or
more.
• Sometimes the information of the adjective clause is not
important for the idea:

Daniel, who was late again, sits next to me in English.

The kitten, which was the smallest, finally found a home.

The doctor, who was very kind, said that we shouldn’t worry about
it.
