II. Tet Holiday 1. Definition


- Traditional New Year, Lunar New Year,... is the first occasion of
the new year based on the Lunar calendar in Vietnam.

- Nguyen Dan: The morning of the beginning of the new


year.
- Tet is a way to read the Sino-Vietnamese sound of the word “tiet".

- Tet Ta is called to distinguish it from the Western New Year.

a. Before Tet

- In Vietnam, every house is usually decorated by Hoa mai-


apricot blossom in the South or Hoa dao-peach flower in the
North.

- On the 23rd day of the twelfth month by Lunar calendar, Apricot blossom (n): Hoa mai
there is a rite to see Tao Quan (Kitchen God) off. A rite (n): nghi thức

- Build a Lunar New year pole to expel evil spirits on Tet holiday.

a. Before Tet

- Go to Tet market to buy necessary items.

- Preparing the five-fruit tray with the desire for luck.


- Wrapping Tet cakes.

- Making Tet jams.
