What are the major functions of the mouth?

Digestion – receives food, preparing it for


digestion in the stomach and small intestine.
Communication – modifies the sound
produced in the larynx to create a range of
sounds.
Breathing – acts as an air inlet in addition to the
nasal cavity.
Two sets of dentition:

Primary, Temporary or Deciduous

Permanent Teeth or Adult Teeth

older adults. But anyone who has teeth can get
cavities, including babies.

Gum Disease
Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum
disease, also called periodontal disease. It causes
irritation, redness, swelling and bleeding of your
gingiva, which is the part of your gum around the
base of your teeth.
Calcular Deposits
Calcium buildup—also called calcium deposits, tartar,
or calculus—are hardened patches of plaque that form
on the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film that coats teeth and
contains bacteria. If plaque is not removed on a regular
basis, it will harden and form visible calcium deposits
(tartar).
