Global Warming
Aim: To explain what is global warming and what causes it

Working Scientifically: To describe how humans are

increasing the greenhouse effect
WE
Quick Check

1. State two processes that add carbon dioxide to

the atmosphere.
2. How do green plants remove carbon dioxide from
the atmosphere?
Think, Pair
Why do we need an atmosphere? and Share

● Atmosphere contains the oxygen we need to live.

● It protects us from harmful solar radiation.

● It creates the pressure without which liquid water

couldn't exist on our planet's surface.

● And it warms our planet and keeps temperatures

habitable for our living Earth.
The Greenhouse Effect Reading 1

Greenhouses work by letting in

as much sunlight as possible
then trapping this as energy in
the thermal store. The
transparent walls and roof of
the greenhouse allow all the
visible rays of sunlight to pass
through. This light heats up
the air and objects (like the
plants and soil) inside the
greenhouse.
The Greenhouse Effect Reading 2

The carbon dioxide in the

atmosphere has the same
Carbon
effect as a greenhouse. dioxide
We call it a ‘greenhouse
gas’.
Energy from the sunlight passes
through the atmosphere and warms
I
the Earth’s surface. This energy is
radiated back towards space.
Greenhouse gas molecules absorb
this outgoing energy and re-emit in
all directions, warming the surface
of the Earth and the lower
atmosphere.
I

Carbon
dioxide

The greenhouse
Carbon
effect is made dioxide
stronger when
humans put more
carbon dioxide into
the atmosphere by
burning fossil fuels.
Task: Complete the diagram depicting the greenhouse
effect by choosing the correct statements to fill in the
boxes:
• The warm Earth radiates
energy
• Solar radiation
• Most of the energy from the
Sun is absorbed by the Earth
• Some energy is absorbed by
greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere and re-radiated
back to the surface
• Some of the energy is
reflected by the Earth back out
to space.
What is global warming? I

A long-term increase in global temperature due to human

activities releasing greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere
affecting the climate, environment and ecosystems.

Some scientists think that one

of the effects of global
warming is climate change – this
is where the normal weather
patterns start to change.
Burning Fossil Fuels
I

As demand for fuel continues to rise to run our cars, power our
factories and heat our houses, carbon dioxide is sent into the
atmosphere and is having a devastating effect on the Earth’s climate.

carbon
hydrocarbon + oxygen  dioxide + water
What effect do you think the increase of
greenhouse gases has on the planet? WE
How have humans added to I
greenhouse gases?

• More deforestation
• Less photosynthesis
• More carbon dioxide
I

The mass removal of trees for various reasons has a huge

impact on the global climate.
How have humans added to I
greenhouse gases?

• More farming
• More flatulence!
• More methane
Match the words to the WE
correct definition
Climate change A change in the general
weather conditions

Greenhouse effect The effect of Carbon Dioxide in

the atmosphere preventing heat
from escaping the Earth

A rise in the average temperature

Global Warming of the Earth which could lead to
climate change
What causes the greenhouse WE
effect?

The Sun’s energy reaches the Earth

and is …………………….
absorbed by the surface
What causes the greenhouse WE
effect?

Infrared radiation is ………………..

trappedby
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
Human impact on greenhouse WE
gases:

How does combustion affect

carbon dioxide levels?
DECREASE INCREASE
Human impact on greenhouse WE
gases:
Which greenhouse gas is due
to farming?
CARBON
METHANE
DIOXIDE
Human impact on greenhouse WE
gases:

What reduces the amount of carbon

dioxide removed from the atmosphere?
DEFORESTATION COMBUSTION
YOU
Independent Task
1. Where does the energy for the Earth originally
come from? What is the greenhouse effect?

2. Explain how deforestation contributes to the

greenhouse effect

3. Explain why this name was given to the greenhouse

effect
Exit Ticket
Aim: To explain what is global warming and what causes it
