PAST PERFECT

STRUCTURE (Positive Sentences)


Subject + HAD + Past Participle + Obj.
(reg. – d/ -ed;
irregular – 3rd column)
They had gone home.
She had studied a lot.
He had played tennis.
PAST PERFECT
STRUCTURE (Negative Sentences)
Subject + HADN’T + Past Participle + Obj.
(had not)
They hadn’t gone home.
She hadn’t studied a lot.
He hadn’t played tennis.
PAST PERFECT
• Use:
Two actions happened in the past, but one of them
was completed before the other one.
Past Perfect has connection with Simple Past: Past
Perfect is used with the earliest action, Simple Past
is used with the latest action
Examples:They had gone home when we arrived.
My husband had prepared dinner when I got
home.
PAST PERFECT
Example I:
1) 8:00 = wake up 2)8:15= eat breakfast
earlier activity (Past Perfect) later activity (Simple Past)

After I had woken up, I ate breakfast.


I ate breakfast after I had woken up.

Example II:
1) 5:15 = have bath 2)5:30= watch TV
earlier activity (Past Perfect) later activity (Simple Past)

After I had had a bath, I watched TV.


I watched TV after I had had a bath.
