Introduction to the

Communicative
Competence Model
The Communicative Competence Model is a framework that describes the
capability of a language user to interact effectively with others in a given
communication situation. It goes beyond the mere knowledge of grammar and
vocabulary, encompassing a wide range of competencies essential for effective
communication. It includes grammatical competence, sociolinguistic
competence, discourse competence, and strategic competence. The model is
widely used in language teaching and learning, as it provides a comprehensive
approach to language use and communication.

Components of the Communicative
Competence Model

1 Grammatical Competence
Grammatical competence refers to the knowledge of the rules and structures of a
language. It involves understanding the syntax, morphology, and semantics of a language,
allowing language users to form grammatically-correct sentences.

2 Sociolinguistic Competence
Sociolinguistic competence involves understanding the social and cultural context in
which a language is used. It encompasses the ability to interpret and use language
appropriately based on social norms, etiquette, and cultural practices.

3 Discourse Competence
Discourse competence pertains to the ability to convey and interpret meaning in extended
spoken or written discourse. It involves understanding textual coherence, cohesion, and
pragmatics.

4 Strategic Competence
Strategic competence involves the ability to compensate for communication breakdowns
and to enhance communicative effectiveness through strategies such as paraphrasing,
using fillers, or asking for clarification.
