Objective of a vertical axis floating wind turbine
The objective of a vertical axis floating wind turbine is to capture wind energy in
deep ocean waters. They are designed to take advantage of stronger, steadier
winds found further offshore, while offering advantages like: Lower center of
gravity for better stability on floating platforms. Simpler design with easier
maintenance due to ground-based gearbox and generator. Potential for efficient
power generation at larger scales.
Introduction
 Wind energy is the fastest growing source of clean energy worldwide.
 A vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) is a type of wind turbine where the main rotor shaft is set
transverse to the wind while the main components are located at the base of the turbine. This
arrangement allows the generator and gearbox to be located close to the ground, facilitating
service and repair.
 Offshore wind power includes inshore water area such as lakes
 The winds usually occur due to differences in pressure, in the atmosphere. For example, when
there exists a difference in pressure within the atmosphere, air will shift from areas with higher
pressure to areas with lower pressure.
 Currently wind energy make up 2% of the global energy supply and is expected to grow by 160%
in the next five years.

Gearbox
A gearbox in a wind turbine is mainly used to enhance the rotating
speed from a low speed shaft to a high-speed shaft connecting through
an electrical generator.
Generator
 A generator is a machine that converts mechanical energy to
electrical energy that is further used in power grid stations.
 The electric generator is opposite to the electric motor in the
working principle and similar in construction. A generator that
comes with a permanent magnet is also known as PMSM or
permanent. magnet synchronous generators.
Battery
 Battery stores the energy generated from the generator and supplies
whenever needed.
Display
 This is a Digital Voltmeter Ammeter that is having Voltmeter and
Ammeter in single package with dual LED color. In this display or
module you can measure the Voltage and Current. The Voltage
measurement range is 0-100V and the Current measurement is up-to
10A.
Working principle
 The kinetic energy of the wind is converted into rotational energy using the
vertical axis wind turbine which is either coupled directly or through gear to
alternator.
 A vertical axis wind turbine is connected to the Gearbox which includes gears.
This gearbox is directly connected to the electric generator shaft. This turbine will
revolve once the wind blows & the gearbox in this system will enhance the turbine
rotations internally & send these rotations to the generator like a mechanical input.
So the generator will generate the output as the electrical energy by using this
input so that this output will be stored within the rechargeable battery .
 Since the wind speed is variable, the output of the generator will also be variable.

Advantages
 The energy produced is pollution free.
 Safety of birds and animals are ensured.
 Maximum utilisation of renewable source of energy.
 floating wind turbine are the potentially low environmental impact.
 The wind speed and frequency is higher and more stable at sea than on land, as
there are no obstacles to limit its path
 Wind energy which is under utilised as of now can be harnessed efficiently.
 Higher wind speed ,less turbulence.
 Space is not an issue offshore.
Conclusion
Vertical axis wind turbines(VAWTs) on floating platforms
hold promise for unlocking the potential of deep-water
offshore wind energy. While there are still technical
challenges to address, this technology has the potential to
play a significant role in the future of renewable energy
production.
